What is Holochain-rust and what is it for?

Holochain-rust is the Rust codebase for Holochain: the core that runs Holochain apps, the container code that manages them, and a development kit for writing an app's own logic in Rust. Developers use it to build Holochain applications whose logic is written in Rust and compiled to WebAssembly.

Holochain-rust is the Rust implementation of Holochain. Its README describes the repository as the home of the Holochain Rust libraries, "being rewritten from Go into Rust, and extended" — a Rust rework of an earlier Go prototype of the framework.

The repository covers three overlapping parts. The core executes a Holochain app's DNA and exposes its API functions to Zomes; the container code loads and manages multiple app instances, with a container crate that builds to an executable meant to run as a background service; and hdk-rust is a library and syntax for writing Zome code in Rust, which compiles to WebAssembly.

A concrete route is printed in the README: it names the first containers — the GUI-driven holosqape and the command-line hcshell used for test running — and points anyone who wants the tools for building Holochain applications to a Developer Preview pre-release that ships binaries for macOS, Ubuntu and Windows. The repository README is the place to start reading.

How to get it

As a library

  1. Add the development kit crate to a Rust Zome crate as a dependency.
  2. Write Zome functions against the kit's API; the code is built to WebAssembly for the Holochain core to run.

From the command line

  1. Clone the repository.
  2. Run make, which installs or updates the required Rust version, builds the Rust libraries from source, and builds and installs the command-line tools (Ubuntu and macOS only).

From the command line

  1. The README directs readers who want the tools for building Holochain applications to the Developer Preview pre-release rather than to these build instructions.
  2. Download the archive for your platform (macOS, Ubuntu or Windows); the per-OS installation instructions are in the README inside the zip.
