What is holochain-scaffolding and what is it for?

holochain-scaffolding is a developer tool that generates the starting code for a new Holochain app, producing a project skeleton a builder can design on top of. It is used at the beginning of a build, so that a Holochain app begins from a working structure rather than an empty folder.

holochain-scaffolding is a scaffolding tool for Holochain, the platform developers build peer-to-peer applications on. Dark Soil Studio's p2p Shipyard documentation lists it as the first step in starting a Holochain app: its command creates a new, empty web app project, and a companion tool then adds support for cross-platform binaries.

Starting a Holochain app by hand means laying out several moving parts before any feature work begins — the application's structure, its backend logic, and a frontend to talk to it. A scaffolding tool writes that arrangement into place so a builder can move straight to deciding what their app does. The p2p Shipyard guide describes the result as the skeleton of a peer-to-peer app.

A builder runs the command nix run github:darksoil-studio/scaffolding#hc-scaffold-happ -- web-app, enters the folder it creates, and adds cross-platform binaries with the tauri-plugin-holochain scaffolding command. The p2p Shipyard guide at darksoil.studio walks through these steps and the nix setup they require.

How to get it

From the command line

  1. Install the nix package manager and follow its prompts.
  2. Add the darksoil-studio cache so builds can fetch prepared packages: nix run nixpkgs#cachix use darksoil-studio
  3. Create a new Holochain app: nix run github:darksoil-studio/scaffolding#hc-scaffold-happ -- web-app
  4. Optionally add cross-platform binaries inside the new folder with the tauri-plugin-holochain scaffolding command.
