What is Holochain-rust and what is it for?
Holochain-rust is an early Rust implementation of the Holochain framework, a way to build peer-to-peer applications whose data is kept on the devices of the people using them. It is the retired first Rust version of that framework, replaced by a later implementation, and the repository is kept as a record of how Holochain was built in Rust.
Holochain-rust was an early Rust implementation of the Holochain framework for building peer-to-peer applications. Its README states the code is loosely based on an earlier Go prototype and was released as alpha software, and that this version has since been replaced by a later one described as more performant, stable and secure. The repository is kept as a record of that work.
The project held the pieces needed to run distributed applications whose data sits on the devices of the people using them rather than on a central service. A small program called a conductor loads those applications and connects them to user interfaces, while application logic written in Rust is compiled to WebAssembly and packaged as DNA. Each DNA forms its own peer-to-peer network for storing and validating its data.
The architecture documentation lists a sample application, app-spec, that the project used to demonstrate current functionality and to drive development, alongside a Node.js conductor for running tests. Readers who want the framework's own account of its parts and their purpose can start with that overview in the repository.
How to get it
As a library
- Use the repository's core crate as a Rust library for defining and running DNA instances, the self-contained units an application is built from.
- The repository README points core developers to a setup for working on the framework itself.
From the command line
- The cli crate provides a command-line developer tool, hc, for scaffolding a DNA, running tests, and packaging a DNA for a conductor.

Questions people ask
- Is Holochain-rust the current version of Holochain?
- No. The repository README states this Rust version has been replaced by a later one that is more performant, stable and secure, and that it is no longer the current repository. source
- What is a conductor in Holochain-rust?
- A conductor is the executable that loads and runs one or more DNA instances and connects them to interfaces. The architecture documentation describes a Rust conductor and a Node.js conductor used for testing. source
- What is the HDK?
- The Holochain Development Kit, hdk-rust, is the library and syntax for writing an application's zome code in Rust. The architecture documentation calls it a reference implementation and notes that other languages compiling to WebAssembly can also be supported. source
