What is The Epistemic Resonance Protocol and what is it for?

The Epistemic Resonance Protocol, published as the Epistemic Resonance Protocol, is an app for structured disagreement: people record claims, then attach typed critiques and evidence to them instead of reducing them to a like or a score. It is built for discourse that keeps its history — a claim stays together with the argument built around it, and nothing is quietly deleted.

The project is developed by StateofIntent, and it presents itself as an answer to the way social platforms flatten knowledge. A long rehabilitation protocol travels as one short post, becomes an engagement number, and arrives without its context; moderation is algorithmic, and reputation systems judge the speaker rather than the statement. The maintainers describe the result they want as an epistemic nervous system rather than a social network.

Each person installs the app and runs their own node, with an identity that is a keypair kept on their own machine — there is no account to sign up for. Inside a domain, a claim is a starting point: other people attach critiques of different kinds, such as experiential, methodological or logical, along with the evidence behind them. There are no scores, rankings or reputation numbers for any agent, claim or critique, and retraction adds a record of withdrawal rather than deleting what was said.

A claim about a treatment can carry a methodological critique and a counter-example from experience side by side, which is the sort of exchange a threaded feed usually loses. Posts from Twitter/X can be drawn in as lightweight pointers to outside material, with a record of the correlation kept on the Holochain side; the maintainers state that the bridge's on-chain half is verified while the live API layer remains unverified. The repository's INSTALL.md is the place to start.

How to get it

Desktop app

  1. Download the build for your system from the latest release of the desktop packaging repository: Windows setup.exe, macOS .dmg for Apple Silicon or Intel, Linux .AppImage or .deb.
  2. You do not need Rust, Node, a terminal or an account — the app carries its own Holochain conductor and creates your identity as a keypair kept on your own machine.
  3. The builds are not code signed. On macOS, open Terminal and run: xattr -r -d com.apple.quarantine "/Applications/Epistemic Resonance.app". On Windows, SmartScreen will warn; choose 'More info' then 'Run anyway'.
  4. Read INSTALL.md first for the other things worth knowing: peer discovery currently runs on Holochain's development bootstrap server, and data does not survive an incompatible upgrade.

As a library

  1. For writing your own client rather than using the desktop app, install the typed client library from npm: npm install @stateofintent/agent-sdk

Questions people ask

Do I need the Holochain Launcher to run it?
No. The maintainers state that no released Launcher can install this app — it fails with a manifest parse error rather than a version mismatch — and that current builds each carry their own Holochain conductor instead. source
Are there builds for Android or iOS?
Not currently. The install guide says there is no phone build, and that the Electron-based desktop builds cannot target mobile at all; the mobile UI is already responsive and PWA-installable. source
Can a claim be deleted, or scored?
No. The release notes state there are no scores, rankings or reputation numbers for any agent, claim or critique anywhere in the app, and that there is no delete — retraction adds a record of withdrawal while the original remains. source
