What is Zome Traits Protocol and what is it for?

Zome Traits Protocol is a design proposal and Rust library for describing what a Holochain zome does, so that separate apps can recognise a zome of the same kind and call it in the same way. It lets a zome developer write that description once, as an ordinary trait in code, and have the functions that fulfil it exposed to Holochain automatically.

Zome Traits Protocol is a proposal, published in the holochain-open-dev repositories, for how interfaces between Holochain zomes could be described in code. Its README presents it as "Zome Traits Protocol - Proposal": a design sketch for a Rust library rather than a finished product, aiming to let a developer write down what a zome does once and have that description travel with the code.

In plain terms, a Holochain app is built from small modules whose functions are the only way in, and nothing in the platform tells two apps that they deal with the same kind of data. Zome Traits Protocol explores a way to fix that. A developer declares a trait describing the calls a zome of that kind offers; macros generate the matching Holochain externs, plus a function that reports which traits a zome implements. Other apps and user interfaces could then treat a familiar zome the same way wherever they meet one.

The README's worked example is a zome that keeps account balances and records transactions: defined as a trait, that same zome shape could be recognised by any interface that knows the trait. The repository holds the proposal and its macros; its GitHub releases page lists no released packages, so this is material to read rather than software to add from a package registry.

Questions people ask

Is Zome Traits Protocol something I can install today?
No packaged release is published — the repository's releases page lists none — and the README describes the work as a proposal. It is material for developers writing Holochain zomes in Rust. source
What does "zome trait" mean in this project?
A Rust trait with no &self methods, declared with the zome_trait macro. A matching macro turns the trait's implementation into #[hdk_extern] functions, and a third macro reports the traits a zome implements through a __zome_traits function. source
