What is Resource Module and what is it for?

Resource Module is a small Holochain module for keeping track of bookable resources inside an application's own data store. It is meant to be a reusable building block rather than a finished app: a zome that other Holochain projects embed, paired with ready-made web components for the interface.

Resource Module comes from holochain-open-dev, the group behind a family of small, reusable Holochain modules. Its README introduces it as a "resource module": a compact zome for managing resources inside whichever DNA it is included in, written for what the README calls RSM. The repository now carries GitHub's archived status, so it stands as a reference for how that generation of modules was built rather than as maintained software.

The idea is modularity. Instead of shipping an app, Resource Module ships a piece of one: the zome holds the back-end logic for resources, and an npm package of native web components provides matching front-end blocks. A team assembling a Holochain application can slot both in rather than building a resource layer from nothing. The README notes the zome keeps all resources in the DNA it is included in, and that bridging with other modules was left for later work.

In practice, a consuming web application gains the ability to create and update resources and to search for an agent in the DHT through those front-end elements. The repository README is the place to start; the documentation page it links to could not be retrieved when this profile was written.

How to get it

As a library

  1. Add the zome to a Holochain DNA; the module is designed to be included in other DNAs and to assume as little as possible from them.
  2. Add the npm package of native Web Components to the front end of the consuming web application.

Questions people ask

Is Resource Module a standalone app?
No. It is a reusable module: a Holochain zome designed to be included in other DNAs, plus an npm package of native Web Components for the front end. source
Is Resource Module still maintained?
The GitHub repository is archived and its last recorded push was in February 2022, so it is best read as a historical reference module rather than software under active development. source
Where are the installation instructions?
The README points to a separate documentation page for installation, but that page returned an error when this profile was written; the README itself describes the packaging model — a zome for a DNA plus an npm package of web components. source
