What is reactions and what is it for?

reactions is a reusable building block that lets a Holochain app show and collect small responses — emojis, hearts, stars, a thumbs-up — on individual items shared in the app. It is made to be added to another Holochain app rather than run on its own, so that app's users can see who reacted and to what.

reactions is a small module published under the holochain-open-dev name for adding reactions to a Holochain app. Its README describes it as a zome — a component that runs inside an app's shared data layer — that manages the reactions in whatever DNA it is included in, and it is written to assume as little as possible about the app hosting it. It belongs to a family of reusable modules from the same group, so it is meant to be picked up by another project rather than used by itself.

In use, the module adds a familiar social gesture to an app: someone looking at a shared item can leave a reaction, whether an emoji or an icon such as a heart, a star or a thumbs-up, and see the reactions other people have left. Reactions are recorded as links between the item and the public key of the person reacting, so an app can show who reacted, not only a total, and the module's interface elements keep that view current.

A typical integration puts the reaction controls beside the item itself. The README shows a reactions row and a choosable emoji reaction placed next to one another with the hash of the entry being reacted to, and an icon reaction element that switches between an on and an off icon for a named reaction such as a heart. The repository README and its example markup are the accessible description of the module; the developer documentation site named by its npm package did not resolve when checked in September 2026.

Questions people ask

Can reactions be installed and run on its own?
No. It is packaged as a Holochain zome plus a frontend npm package of web components, and is designed to be included in another app's DNA, so there is nothing to launch by itself. source
Where are the reactions kept?
The module stores reactions in the DNA it is included in, not in a separate shared network. Its README also notes that two authors creating identical content produce the same entry hash, so content that must stay distinguishable has to be author-specific. source
Where is the documentation?
The repository README and the package's npm page point readers to a developer documentation site under holochain-open-dev.github.io, which returned a not-found page when checked in September 2026. The README remains the accessible description of the module and its example markup. source
