What is Mycelix Space and what is it for?
Mycelix Space is a Holochain app for space situational awareness: a peer-to-peer way for operators to publish, share and verify orbital tracking data instead of relying on one national authority. It exists so that tracking satellites and debris, predicting close approaches, and coordinating collision avoidance can draw on many independent contributors.
Mycelix Space describes itself as a decentralized space domain awareness network: a peer-to-peer Holochain app for tracking objects in orbit, predicting close approaches between them, and coordinating space traffic without depending on any single nation's space agency. Its stated aim is to treat space situational awareness as a shared commons that operators can contribute to and check, rather than one authority's private picture.
In human terms, the idea is that satellite operators publish and verify the tracking data they already hold, so the catalogue of orbital objects is assembled from many independent sources instead of a single one. Beside that shared catalogue the project sketches a market where communities can post bounties for removing threatening debris. The repository pairs a Rust core for orbital mechanics with Holochain zomes for objects, observations, conjunctions, bounties and traffic control.
The most concrete piece is the Space Traffic Control Dashboard: a SvelteKit web interface with a 3D CesiumJS globe that propagates public CelesTrak tracking data using SGP4 and monitors conjunction risk. Its README documents running the dashboard on its own with demo data, and separately building the Holochain stack locally. The repository is archived, so those setup notes describe an earlier state of the project rather than a currently supported release; the README is where to read more.
How to get it
In a browser
- cd ui
- npm install
- npm run dev
- Open http://localhost:5173 — the interface runs standalone with demo data and real-time SGP4 propagation, without a Holochain conductor.
Desktop app
- nix develop
- ./scripts/sandbox-setup.sh (builds and runs the hApp in a local Holochain sandbox)
- In another terminal: cd ui && npm install && npm run dev
Questions people ask
- Can the dashboard run without Holochain?
- Yes — the README documents running it on its own from the ui directory with npm, where it works with demo data and real-time SGP4 propagation. source
- Where does its orbital data come from?
- From CelesTrak public catalogues, which the README lists as covering space stations, mega-constellations, navigation and weather satellites, and debris fields. source
- Is the project still maintained?
- The GitHub repository is archived and carries no published releases, so the project is best read as a historical one. source
