What is Mycelix and what is it for?

Mycelix is a Holochain application that groups the services a community runs for itself — housing, care, money, identity and governance — into one system instead of many separate platforms. Its maintainers describe it as a pre-alpha research project, and its most developed part is an encrypted messenger called Pulse.

Mycelix is a Holochain application for what its maintainers call decentralized civic infrastructure: the shared services a community administers for itself rather than buys from a company. Those services are arranged into one unified set of roles grouped into domain clusters — commons (property, housing, care, water, food and transport), civic, hearth, finance, governance, identity, personal, attribution and health. The project's own README describes Mycelix as a pre-alpha research project and asks readers not to treat a cluster as ready to build on merely because it compiles or passes tests.

The ambition is a single place where a neighbourhood or cooperative could run the parts of civic life that normally need separate platforms: listing and sharing housing, tracking care and mutual aid, holding identities and credentials, exchanging money or time, and recording proposals, votes and decisions. Rather than a finished product, the repository presents a workspace of clusters at different stages, each built from Holochain zomes — the small units that define what data is valid and how peers may write it.

The cluster furthest along is Pulse, documented in mycelix-workspace/mycelix-pulse, a working-alpha encrypted messenger whose stated milestone is narrow: two people should be able to exchange, verify, recover and reproduce one encrypted message lifecycle without mock behaviour being mistaken for live behaviour. The root README's Maturity Matrix tracks which clusters build, which have multi-agent tests and which have a deployed interface.

How to get it

In a browser

  1. Install Nix with flakes enabled; the repository's development environment provides Holochain 0.6.0 through Nix.
  2. In the repository, change into the mycelix-pulse directory of mycelix-workspace.
  3. Run the documented development commands in order: nix develop, then just check, just build-dna and just dev.
  4. Open the local UI at http://127.0.0.1:8117. The dev command expects an authenticated Holochain app WebSocket on ws://localhost:8888 using installed app ID mycelix_mail and role main, and a browser with Web Crypto and IndexedDB support.

Questions people ask

What parts of Mycelix can be used today?
The project's README names Pulse, described as decentralized email, as the one cluster with a live user-facing application, and says Praxis, a curriculum platform, is also live. It adds that everything else is a Holochain hApp with tests but no deployed frontend, a component showcase, or research-stage code. source
What do I need installed to try it?
The documented development path needs Nix with flakes enabled, and the supported Pulse application runs in a browser with Web Crypto and IndexedDB support. source
Is the messaging in Pulse encrypted?
Pulse's README says new live sends use a hybrid envelope combining X25519 and ML-KEM-768 key establishment with AES-256-GCM, and recipients require both a Holochain agent signature and an application-level ML-DSA-65 signature. Older classical messages remain readable, and the milestone has no portable key export. source
