What is Mycelix-Mail-hApp and what is it for?

Mycelix-Mail-hApp is a Holochain app for sending and receiving email that sorts messages by how trustworthy the sender is, rather than by reading what a message says. It was made so that a person could keep an inbox on their own device while unwanted mail is filtered out before it is downloaded.

Mycelix-Mail-hApp is a Holochain app for email that was designed around sender reputation instead of message scanning. The project's README describes it as a replacement for content-based spam filtering: rather than inspecting what a message says, it scores how far the sender can be trusted and keeps low-trust mail out of the inbox. The same README says the app reuses the project's own Mycelix Adaptive Trust Layer for those scores.

In human terms, the design puts the mailbox on the person's own device rather than on a provider's server, and encrypts each message body with the recipient's public key. A reader sets a minimum trust level for their inbox, and messages from senders below that level are filtered before they download or open, so unwanted mail is meant to be dropped at that point rather than examined afterwards.

The README works through one example: a bulk sender whose behaviour scores low is given a trust score of about 0.05, while a trusted colleague scores about 0.85, so an inbox filtered at a modest threshold hides the first and shows the second. The README itself is the place to read the full description; the code was written as a Rust DNA with separate zomes for messages and for the trust filter.

How to get it

From the command line

  1. Install Holochain, which the README lists as a prerequisite and obtains through Nix.
  2. Build the integrity and coordinator zomes for wasm32-unknown-unknown with the Rust toolchain and copy the resulting files into the DNA directory.
  3. Pack the DNA with the hc dna pack command, then create a Holochain sandbox and call zome functions such as get_inbox and filter_inbox from the hc command line.

Questions people ask

Is Mycelix-Mail-hApp still maintained?
The repository was archived by its owner and is read-only, and the project's releases page shows no releases published. Treat the README as a record of design intent rather than a description of a maintained service. source
How was the app meant to be run?
The README documents building the zomes and loading the DNA into a Holochain sandbox from the hc command line. It describes desktop and web clients as later phases rather than shipped software. source
Does it work with ordinary email accounts?
The README lists an SMTP bridge for Gmail and Outlook interoperability as a planned phase, not as available functionality. No published source describes that bridge as built. source
