What is Mycelix EduNet and what is it for?
Mycelix EduNet is a decentralized education network: a learning platform where courses, progress and credentials sit with learners instead of on a school's server. It was built as a Holochain app that combines peer-to-peer learning, verifiable credentials and privacy-preserving machine learning, so shared models can improve without anyone's private study data being collected.
Mycelix EduNet is a decentralized education network, described by its authors as privacy-preserving decentralized education: a place to learn where the learner's data stays with the learner. Courses, progress and credentials are designed to live in a Holochain app shared directly between participants rather than in a school's database, and the network is meant to keep working when a device is offline. The project also carries community governance over curricula and quality, with proposals and votes recorded rather than decided by a central operator.
The idea in human terms is collaborative learning without a central collector: learners earn verifiable credentials that travel with them, and the network can improve a shared model from what many people learn without lifting anyone's private study data off their device. The code is a single repository holding four Holochain zomes for courses, federated learning, credentials and governance, Rust crates for the learning logic and aggregation, and a React web client for the interface, so the same records and credentials are intended to be readable across the whole network.
One concrete documented example is a training round: participants train on their own devices, submit only a clipped summary of their update, and the round's coordinator combines those summaries with a trimmed mean or median before releasing a new model with its provenance attached; raw training data never leaves the device. The repository README walks through this protocol and the accompanying privacy notes and schemas.
How to get it
In a browser
- Clone the repository: git clone https://github.com/Luminous-Dynamics/mycelix-edunet.git
- Build the components: make build
- Run the tests: make test
- Start the web client: cd apps/web && npm run dev, then open http://localhost:5173
- Alternatively, from the repository root: docker-compose up --build, then open http://localhost:3000
- Note: these steps come from the repository's own README; the repository is archived and no packaged release is linked there.
Questions people ask
- Is Mycelix EduNet still maintained?
- The GitHub repository is marked archived, and its README documents only building from source rather than a maintained download, so treat it as a historical project. source
- How do you try it?
- The README documents building from source with make build and make test, running the React web client locally on port 5173, or starting the whole stack with docker-compose; no packaged release is linked there. source
- What is Holochain used for in this project?
- It provides the app architecture: courses, progress, credentials and governance entries are kept in Holochain zomes shared between participants, which the README describes as agent-centric and offline-friendly. source
