What is mewsfeed and what is it for?

mewsfeed is a microblogging app built on Holochain, where people write short posts, follow each other and reply in threads. It is a social app with a cat theme — mews instead of tweets, yarns for long back-and-forths — made for calmer conversation than a mainstream feed.

mewsfeed began in the Holochain community as a cat-themed experiment: an early Twitter-style prototype nicknamed Clutter, built to see how a microblogging app would work on Holochain. When Holochain itself was rebuilt, the prototype was rebuilt along with it, and it was later taken up again and renamed mewsfeed.

It is a microblogging app, the kind of place where you write short posts, follow the accounts you find interesting and answer each other in threads. The cat theme shapes the language of the app rather than the other way around: posts are mews, drawn-out exchanges are yarns, and the project describes the people it is built for as the calm cats.

The team uses it in the open. The project's repository invites people to join the conversation on mewsfeed at the hashtags #mewsfeed and #holochain, to send feedback tagged #mewsfeedback, and to follow accounts such as @artbrock and @mattyg. The repository and its Discord are where work is discussed, and the website at mewsfeed.social offers an early access sign-up.

How to get it

Desktop app

  1. Install the Holochain development environment as described in the Holochain developer documentation (a Nix shell is enough).
  2. Clone https://github.com/GeekGene/mewsfeed and change into the folder.
  3. Run 'nix develop' and then 'npm install' to pull in the toolchain and dependencies.
  4. Run 'npm start' to launch the app UI; repeat the command in another terminal for each extra participant.
