What is membrane-invitations and what is it for?

membrane-invitations is a reusable module that handles invitations into a Holochain app: it records who has been invited and tracks clones of the app's DNA. It exists so that teams building a Holochain app can add invitation handling without writing that part themselves.

membrane-invitations is a reusable Holochain module for handling invitations into a DNA. It is not a standalone app: it is built to be dropped into other Holochain apps and to assume as little as possible about the DNA it joins, so a team building an app does not have to write invitation handling from scratch.

The module has two halves. Its back end is a Holochain zome, hc_zome_membrane_invitations, which records invitations and the clones of a DNA that have been created. Its front end is an npm package of browser Custom Elements, so a web app can show and manage invitations without committing to a particular JavaScript framework. Invitations are stored in whichever DNA the zome is added to, rather than in a separate shared space.

Because the project is a module rather than a finished app, the clearest worked example is its own developer setup: a Nix shell, npm install and npm start bring up the module's test app, and npm run build:happ produces a test .happ file. The documentation site the repository links to returned no page when checked on 23 September 2026, so the repository and its npm package page are the surviving references.

How to get it

As a library

  1. Include the hc_zome_membrane_invitations zome in the DNA that should hold the invitations; the module is built to be added to other DNAs and to assume as little as possible about them.
  2. To work on or run the module itself, enter this repository's Nix shell, then run npm install and npm start. Running npm run build:happ produces a test .happ file.

In a browser

  1. Add the npm package @holochain-open-dev/membrane-invitations to a web front end.
  2. Import its Custom Elements into that app so it can connect to and interact with the hc_zome_membrane_invitations zome.

Questions people ask

What is membrane-invitations used for?
It handles invitations and DNA clones as a module inside another Holochain app, so an app can track who has been invited and which clones of its DNA exist without building that logic itself. source
How do you add it to an app?
The zome is meant to be included in the DNA that should hold the invitations, and the front end is the npm package @holochain-open-dev/membrane-invitations, whose Custom Elements connect to that zome. source
