What is language-persistence and what is it for?

language-persistence is an AD4M Language about Languages: a module through which an agent publishes a Language of its own and makes it available to others. It supplies the part of AD4M that lets instances find, verify and add new protocol modules instead of relying on a central place to distribute them.

language-persistence is a module for AD4M, the agent-centric framework from Coasys, and it supplies one specific part of that system: the exchange of Languages themselves. In AD4M a "Language" is a pluggable protocol — the code that decides how data is stored and shared — not a human tongue, though the name plays on the same idea. This project is the Language about Languages, the module through which an agent publishes its own Language and makes it available to others.

In human terms it sits closer to a catalogue of protocols than to an app. AD4M's own documentation describes its bootstrap Language Language as the piece that lets any instance publish a new Language, have its code verified, and discover and install Languages as needed, so the network can grow without central coordination; this repository holds an early implementation of that role (its README calls the host Perspectivism). The module is not launched on its own: the host loads it and calls the create() function it exports, handing it a LanguageContext, and the README records that it passed the IPFS storage interface into its ExpressionAdapter so expressions could be stored as IPFS files.

The concrete example is publishing. AD4M's command-line tools include a publish step that takes a Language bundle, and the Language Language is the piece that receives and records it so other instances can find it. Treat this profile as a historical record rather than a setup guide: the README documents building the code into a single JavaScript bundle, and repository activity stopped in April 2023, so the build and compatibility it describes are not maintained.

How to get it

As a library

  1. There is no published install or download path for this project; it is not distributed as an application.
  2. Its README documents a build rather than an install: the UI icons compile to web components, and index.ts is bundled into one JavaScript file, build/bundle.js.
  3. That bundle was written to be loaded as an AD4M Language module by the host, which calls the create() function it exports and passes it a LanguageContext.
  4. The README calls the host Perspectivism, and repository activity stopped in April 2023, so these build and compatibility details are a historical record rather than a current setup path.

Questions people ask

What is an AD4M Language?
A Language is a pluggable protocol: it stores data in a shared space and returns a URI for it, and retrieval takes that URI and returns the stored data, which AD4M calls an Expression. source
Does language-persistence run on its own?
No. It is a JavaScript module: the AD4M host loads it and calls the create() function it exports, passing a LanguageContext that carries the agent and the storage interfaces the module uses. source
Is this project still maintained?
No recent activity appears in the repository, and its README describes a build for the AD4M host rather than a maintained install path, so the details recorded here are historical. source
