What is Holoom and what is it for?

Holoom is a set of tools for bringing blockchain records into Holochain apps, starting with identity pieces that let someone claim a username and connect their blockchain wallets to their app identity. It exists so an app can work with claims about who a person is — a name, a wallet, or an ID from another system — by having other participants vouch for them.

Holoom is a collection of tools for bringing blockchain records into Holochain apps. Its README describes it as tools for weaving blockchain data into Holochain, and says the first implementations were in blockchain gaming. The project ships three pieces: a Holochain app, a JavaScript client library, and authority services that answer requests about a user registry.

The idea is that a Holochain identity and a blockchain identity can refer to each other. A person claims a unique username in the app, binds blockchain wallets to it by signing, and can attach freeform metadata. A separate role — an authority — vouches for claims such as a username being unique or a wallet belonging to someone. Any participant can offer to act as an authority, and whether one is respected is decided at the point of use: a recipe can name the authorities it trusts.

One documented example is EVM signing offers, where a recipe names the authorities whose attestations it will accept, so an ID attested elsewhere counts only if it comes from one of them. The API documentation is published at holochain-open-dev.github.io/holoom, and the client library is published on npm as @holoom/client. That package's last publication was September 2024 and the registry records no weekly downloads or dependents, so the material available describes the project as it stood then rather than a currently maintained release.

How to get it

As a library

  1. Add the published client package to a JavaScript or TypeScript project: npm install @holoom/client

Questions people ask

What is a wallet attestation in Holoom?
It records a link between a blockchain wallet — Ethereum or Solana — and a participant's identity in the app, proven with signatures and validated against that participant's own record history. source
Who decides whether an authority's attestation is trusted?
Any participant can offer to act as an authority on a username or an external ID, and whether a given authority is respected is decided at the point of use — for example by the trusted authorities named in a recipe. source
What is a recipe in Holoom?
A recipe is an execution program that combines other parts of the Holoom stack, such as oracle documents, EVM byte signing and attestations. Running one produces a record whose hashes are later used with EVM signing offers. source
