What is Holochain-Time-Index and what is it for?
Holochain-Time-Index is a Holochain library that lets an app store and find entries by the time they happened, instead of piling every entry behind one growing list of links. It exists so that a single popular entry does not leave one or a few nodes carrying all the traffic for that part of the network.
Holochain-Time-Index is a Rust library used inside a Holochain app's DNA, not something a person installs and opens. Its documented aim is to address a known weak spot in how Holochain stores data: when a single entry collects a very large number of links, responsibility for storing and resolving all of those links falls to the node that authored the entry, so a popular entry can leave one or a few nodes handling all the traffic through that part of the network.
The library's answer is to file entries into a time tree rather than one flat list. Each entry is placed into a path built from its timestamp, down to a chunk size the host app chooses, so a reader can ask for a period and walk only the relevant part of the tree. A second mechanism caps how many links a single agent may create at any one index, and both settings come from the host app's DNA properties, which the project treats as fixed for the life of that network.
A Holochain app that needs time-ordered data — a group chat, a feed, or a large query paged through history — can lean on the tree instead of hand-built links, and the README describes both uses. Its documentation has not been refreshed since the project's last activity, so current compatibility with Holochain is not established; the repository README holds the design detail, and the organisation's module directory lists it beside other indexing libraries.
How to get it
As a library
- Use it as a dependency of the host app's DNA or integrity zome rather than installing an application; the crate is named hc_time_index and its Holochain dependencies are declared in its Cargo manifest.
- Define the link types your app will use for index links and for the path links between time-tree entries in the host app's integrity zome.
- Set the host DNA's properties to declare the per-agent link limit and the time chunk interval; the library reads these values from the host DNA at runtime.
- Note: this is build-time code for a host app, not a runnable app. The README states it was built against older Holochain releases and the catalog records the project's activity as stalled, so current compatibility is not established by its documentation.

Questions people ask
- Is Holochain-Time-Index an app I run, or a library I build with?
- It is a library for a host Holochain DNA: its README describes it as a crate whose settings are read from the DNA that uses it, and directs integration through the host app's integrity zome rather than user installation. source
- How many links can one agent create at an index?
- No more than the per-agent limit declared in the host DNA's properties; the library reads that limit from the host DNA, and the project documents both that limit and the chunk interval as fixed for the lifetime of that network, with changes handled by creating a new network and linking to it. source
- Does it work with current Holochain versions?
- The documentation does not establish that. The README states the crate was built against older Holochain releases, and the catalog records the project's activity as stalled, so its compatibility with current Holochain is unverified. source
