What is happs_boilerplate and what is it for?

happs_boilerplate is a development template for a Holochain app: it pairs a Holochain application DNA with a TypeScript web client that reaches the app through a GraphQL Apollo server. It exists to give developers a working starting point for that client-and-server arrangement, so a new project does not have to assemble it from scratch.

happs_boilerplate is a scaffold for building a Holochain app, described in the repository as a boilerplate with a GraphQL Apollo client-server model written in TypeScript. Its README states that the data layer follows the Apollo GraphQL tutorial, and the repository ships an application DNA alongside a web interface and a GraphQL server. It is a starting point for developers rather than an application people use directly.

In practice the template shows one way to put GraphQL between a user interface and a Holochain instance. A small GraphQL server runs alongside each Holochain node, and the browser interface sends its queries and mutations to that server instead of talking to the node itself. The README's own run sequence starts one Holochain node and one GraphQL server per person, which is how its example works.

The README documents running two agents locally, Alice and Bob, each with its own interface page and its own GraphQL endpoint for trying queries and mutations. The setup it describes uses the sim2h server and Apollo Engine keys typical of the project's period, and the repository has not been pushed to since early 2023, so it reads best as a historical example rather than a currently maintained stack. The repository README is the place to learn more.

How to get it

In a browser

  1. Clone the repository from https://github.com/sdelvalle57/happs_boilerplate.
  2. In ui/client and separately in ui/server, run npm install.
  3. Create a .env file in both the client and the server and set ENGINE_API_KEY, following the Apollo tutorial's production step.
  4. Set the service name in each folder's apollo.config.js to the service you registered.
  5. In ui/client, run npm run codegen to build the TypeScript objects.
  6. Inside a nix-shell, from the dna directory, run hc test or hc package.
  7. Start sim2h_server in a nix-shell, then from ui/client run npm run start:holochain, which starts two agents (Alice, Bob).
  8. In another terminal run npm run start:apollo-server to start two GraphQL server instances (Alice, Bob).
  9. Run npm run start:ui and open http://localhost:8080 for Alice and http://localhost:8081 for Bob; the GraphQL endpoints are at http://localhost:4000 and http://localhost:4001.
  10. Caveat: these are the repository's own documented steps. They reference the sim2h server and Apollo Engine keys of the project's period, and the repository has not been pushed to since early 2023, so they are a historical record rather than a statement that the stack installs or runs safely today.

Questions people ask

How do you run happs_boilerplate?
The README documents installing the client and server with npm, setting an Apollo Engine key and service name, building the DNA with hc test or hc package inside a nix-shell, then starting the sim2h server, the Holochain nodes, the GraphQL servers and the interface. Those steps describe the tooling of the project's own period rather than current compatibility. source
Is happs_boilerplate still maintained?
The repository's most recent push is dated January 2023 and no release is recorded for it, and the catalog lists its activity as stalled. The repository does not establish compatibility with later Holochain versions. source
