What is hc-ops and what is it for?
hc-ops is a command-line tool for operating Holochain conductors, the processes that run Holochain apps. It is for people who deploy, test and inspect those conductors, and it gives them a repeatable way to tag a conductor, install and initialise an app, and look at what a running conductor is doing.
hc-ops is a command-line tool for operating Holochain conductors — the processes that run Holochain apps. Its repository describes it as the missing tooling for operating Holochain, and it is written in Rust for people who deploy, test and inspect conductors rather than for people writing logic inside a zome. Everything it does is aimed at the operational side of running Holochain.
In practice the tool remembers conductors and agents between commands. A conductor is given a short tag, and later commands address it by that tag instead of by an address and port, with the records kept in a small local SQLite database. That record-keeping is what turns a set of one-off calls against a conductor's admin interface into a routine a person can repeat.
The workflow the repository documents is installing and initialising a test app. A user tags a running conductor, packages a small fixture app, installs it through the conductor's admin interface, and runs its init callback, which is expected to report a passing init result. The README also shows a Holochain conductor being started inside a Nix development shell for testing against.
How to get it
From the command line
- On an Ubuntu-style system, install the SQLite development libraries: apt update && apt install libsqlite3-dev
- Install the Diesel CLI used for the state database: cargo install diesel_cli --no-default-features --features sqlite
- Point the tool at its state file: export DATABASE_URL=development.sqlite3
- Optionally start a Holochain conductor to test against, for example inside a Nix development shell, then run the tool from the repository root with cargo run -- <command>
Questions people ask
- Does hc-ops ship as an installable package or is it built from source?
- The repository's instructions build hc-ops from source with Cargo rather than installing a released package; the documented setup is for an Ubuntu-style system and installs the SQLite development libraries first. source
- What does hc-ops connect to?
- It connects to a running Holochain conductor through that conductor's admin websocket, using an address and port stored against a conductor tag. source
- What license does hc-ops use?
- The repository states the GNU General Public License v3.0. source
