What is geolocation and what is it for?

geolocation is a reusable module for Holochain, meant to be added to a larger app rather than run on its own. It is packaged so another app can include it as a backend unit and import its ready-made interface pieces instead of building that part itself.

geolocation is a small module in the holochain-open-dev collection, described in its own repository as a pluggable geolocation module. It was started from the collection's Reusable Module Template, and its README is still that template's text: it still tells a developer to rename the module, and its example code is written for an unrelated calendar module. Nothing in the repository documents the module's own feature list. hAppRadar's record lists no release for the project, its last recorded repository change in June 2021, and describes its activity as stalled.

The idea behind this kind of module is reuse rather than a product you launch. A Holochain app is assembled from backend units called zomes that live inside a DNA, with its interface built separately. A reusable module packages a piece of that work as a zome other apps can include, plus a front-end package of web components other interfaces can import — so an app can gain the same capability without rebuilding it.

A worked example is included, but it is the template's: a consuming app adds the module as a dependency in its DNA, then places the module's web components in an HTML page, in that example for a calendar. The README and the repository's Cargo workspace file are the only written documentation, and the documentation link the README names belongs to that same calendar placeholder.

Questions people ask

Can I install and run geolocation as an app?
No runnable app is documented. The repository presents the code as a module designed to be included in another app's DNA, not as an application of its own, and it gives no standalone way to run it. source
Can I follow the installation steps in the README?
Not as they stand. The steps are the scaffolding template's, naming a placeholder module and demonstrating an unrelated calendar module's code; the repository's Cargo manifest still lists its workspace member under that placeholder name. source
