What is Comments Module and what is it for?
Comments Module is a small building block for a Holochain app: it adds a Comments Module layer an app can include instead of writing its own. It ships as a zome for the app's backend and a frontend package of web components for its interface.
Comments Module belongs to a family of reusable modules published by the holochain-open-dev group, whose guides describe a shared aim of offering open-source infrastructure for Holochain applications so that each project does not rebuild the same pieces. The module appeared in 2022, packaged as a Holochain zome alongside a frontend package on npm. Its repository has seen no push since July 2022 and its catalogued activity is stalled, so what follows describes the module as it was documented then rather than as maintained software today.
The idea is deliberately small: an app that wants Comments Module does not have to build them. The zome is made to be included in another DNA and to assume as little as possible from it, so Comments Module become a layer an app can add beside its own logic. Comments Module are stored in the DNA that includes the zome. A companion frontend package supplies the interface side — web components, built as standard custom elements, that a web page can drop in and point at that zome.
A team building an app on Holochain would include the zome, then import the frontend package's types, client, store and elements into its interface so the module's own components create and display Comments Module. The store is built to take a Holochain client, so the same elements serve both native Holochain and Holo contexts. The repository README is where to learn more; the installation documentation the package points to did not resolve in September 2026, so no runnable install path is offered here.
How to get it
As a library
- Include the hc_zome_comments zome in your own DNA, alongside your application's other zomes.
- The zome is designed to be included in other DNAs and to assume as little as possible from them, so no route, style or global state is imposed on the host app.
In a browser
- Add the frontend package @holochain-open-dev/comments, which exports types, a client, a store and a collection of custom elements.
- Import the elements into a web interface and provide the store — either by wrapping them in the module's context element or by passing the store to a single element directly.

Questions people ask
- Do I install Comments Module as an app?
- No. It is a module meant to be included inside another DNA, so it is a building block for an app rather than something you open on its own. source
- Will the comment interface work in any web framework?
- The frontend package exports custom elements, which the browser handles directly, so they can be used with any framework; the package also exports types, a client and a store for use without the elements. source
- Where are the Comments Module stored?
- In the DNA that includes the zome. The module's own documentation notes that it still stores all Comments Module in the DNA in which it is included. source
