What is Cancellations and what is it for?

Cancellations is a small, reusable building block for a Holochain app that lets someone mark one of their records as cancelled and record the reason, instead of simply removing it. Developers add it to their own app so the reason for a cancellation stays next to the record it refers to.

Cancellations is one of the small reusable modules published by holochain-open-dev, a collection of building blocks that Holochain app developers combine instead of writing everything themselves. This one is shared as a pair of Rust zomes and a small interface package, and its own documentation describes it as a module you integrate into your application rather than an app you use on its own.

The module is for keeping the reason for a cancellation, not just the fact of it. When a record in a Holochain app is cancelled, the module stores a separate cancellation record that carries a plain-text reason and a pointer to the record being cancelled, and links the two together. Because the cancellation lives alongside the original rather than replacing it, everyone reading the data later can see both that something was withdrawn and why it was withdrawn.

The cancellation is written against any entry's identifier, so it can be added to a variety of apps. For example, a group keeping shared books could let a member cancel a mistaken expense and note that it was entered twice, leaving both the withdrawn entry and the explanation visible to the group. Developers can find the module's tooling and packaging instructions in the repository README, and its integration steps in the module's documentation site.

How to get it

As a library

  1. Treat it as a module to embed in your own Holochain app: add the cancellations integrity and coordinator zomes to your DNA, and use the @holochain-open-dev/cancellations UI package for the cancellation dialog and lists.
  2. Follow the module's own backend and frontend setup pages for the exact integration steps.
  3. If you want to run a development network or package a build yourself, the repository README documents the nix shell, npm install, npm start for two local agents and a packaging step.

Questions people ask

What does a cancellation record actually hold?
A short text reason and the identifier of the record being cancelled, held as its own record and linked to that target. The module refuses deletion of that link, so a recorded cancellation is not quietly removed. source
How does a developer add Cancellations to a Holochain app?
By adopting the module: the integrity and coordinator Cancellations zomes go into the app's DNA and the @holochain-open-dev/cancellations interface package supplies the cancellation dialog and list elements. The repository README also documents the development environment, running a two-node network locally and packaging a build. source
Is there a packaged build to install?
The README documents a packaging step that produces a webhapp intended for the Holochain Launcher, but the repository publishes no release and contains no built artifact, so the documented packaging path is something a developer runs rather than a download offered today. source
