What is agent-registration and what is it for?

agent-registration is a Holochain zome — a reusable piece of shared back-end code — that keeps a public record of the participants who have joined a network, so other participants can look up their identifiers. It is meant for Holochain apps whose members need to know who else has joined.

agent-registration is a Holochain zome: a self-contained piece of shared back-end code that a Holochain app bundles into its DNA. Its stated purpose is to register participants automatically as they join a network, and to answer questions about who is already registered. The repository describes it as providing automatic registration of agents entering a network, plus a query capability to determine who is registered.

In plain terms, Holochain networks are formed by the participants themselves, and each participant holds their own key. This zome is meant to give a group a shared, public record of who has arrived, so that one participant can find out the identifiers of the others. Two sides are implied: joining writes a participant into the record, and a query reads back the names on it.

A group building a Holochain app that needs a member list — so members can address one another after joining — could bundle this zome into the app's DNA for that purpose. The project's own starting point is its repository README, which is also where its remaining work is listed; the Usage section there is still marked "Todo", and tests, defining the query API as a zome trait, handling agent deletion, and indexing for large networks are listed as outstanding.

How to get it

As a library

  1. The repository is a Rust workspace whose members are zome/lib, zome/rpc, zome/storage, zome/storage_consts and zome/zome; the README presents the project as a zome to be used as one part of a Holochain app, and its Usage section is still marked "Todo", so no usage instructions are published.
  2. The only setup the README documents is for developing the zome itself: install the Holochain tooling yourself, or use the included Nix environment by running nix-shell from the repository directory.
  3. This documentation is unmaintained: the repository's last recorded public activity was a push in 2022, and the setup shown reflects the tooling of that period rather than a current install path.

Questions people ask

Is agent-registration a ready-to-install app?
No. It is a zome — shared back-end code intended to be built into a Holochain app's DNA — and the README's Usage section is still marked "Todo", so no usage instructions are published. source
What work does the project still list as incomplete?
Its README lists tests, defining the query API as a zome trait, handling agent deletion when one is removed from the network, and updating indexing for large networks as outstanding items. source
Is the project still active?
No. The repository's last recorded public activity is a push in 2022, and the README's outstanding-work list is unchanged from that period. source
