What is HoloBro and what is it for?

HoloBro is a desktop web browser that keeps browsing data such as history on the device it runs on, and uses Holochain only for features the person switches on, such as syncing bookmarks, contacts and chat. It is built for people who want to run their own browser shell and decide, feature by feature, what gets shared with peers.

HoloBro is a desktop web browser built as a Tauri application with a React and TypeScript interface, wrapping an embedded web view and an optional Holochain layer. Its repository introduces HoloBro as a local-first desktop shell and describes it plainly as a scaffold, naming stronger anonymity guarantees, production-grade chat encryption, TURN support for video calls and fully hardened web isolation as follow-on work. The project's catalog line calls it a P2P decentralized browser.

The design idea is that ordinary browsing stays with the person doing it. The project's own data-classes document sets browsing history, tabs and downloads to device-only storage with no network calls, and Holochain is reached only for features that are switched on. Bookmarks sync to Holochain only through a toggle in the Bookmarks panel, and the same document records that chat message bodies are encrypted on chain when a passphrase is configured and otherwise remain plaintext, which the interface warns about.

A concrete example is the bookmarks panel: leave sync off and the list is a local file on your machine; turn it on while connected to a conductor and the list is mirrored through Holochain instead. The repository README documents installation, the desktop targets for Windows, macOS and Linux, and the feature set, while the docs folder carries the data policy and privacy-operator notes.
