What is HoloBro and what is it for?

HoloBro is a desktop application that pairs an embedded web browser with tools for saved links, contacts, chat and basic network diagnostics. It can use Holochain so that this personal data is held by the people using it rather than in a single hosted service.

HoloBro is a desktop application that combines a web browser with a small set of personal tools and is built with the Tauri framework and React. Its distinguishing part is Holochain: when a Holochain conductor is connected, saved links, trusted contacts, chat messages and WebRTC signaling are held through Holochain rather than in one hosted service. With no conductor connected, the app falls back to ordinary local storage so it can still be opened and tried.

The idea is a local-first workspace: a browser window you already use, with the things around it — bookmarks, contacts, conversations — kept by the people using it. Holochain holds those records, while the browser, the network utilities and the assistant hooks are ordinary desktop code. The maintainer describes the project as a scaffold and lists strong anonymity guarantees, production-grade chat encryption, TURN relay for WebRTC and fully hardened web isolation as follow-on work.

A concrete path from the README is Holochain live mode: build the zomes, pack the DNA and hApp, install the .happ on your own conductor, then set VITE_HC_APP_WS and VITE_HC_APP_TOKEN (and optionally VITE_HC_ADMIN_WS) in a .env.local file and restart the app. Without those variables it writes bookmarks, contacts and chat to demo local storage.
