What is Your Own AI and what is it for?
Your Own AI is a free, open-source desktop app that runs AI models on a person's own computer rather than on a company's servers. It exists so that a user's conversations, memories, documents and the signed records of an AI's work stay on the machine they own, with only an optional paid path to online models.
Your Own AI is a free, open-source desktop app for macOS, Windows and Linux that runs AI models on the user's own computer. It is built by the Flowsta project and released under the AGPL. Instead of sending conversations to a company's servers it downloads open models — GGUF files — from a curated catalogue that checks them against the machine's memory and graphics hardware, then keeps the chats, memories and uploads local, usable without an account or an internet connection.
Inside the app, each AI is a character with its own personality, portrait, knowledge and memory. Users author their own or start from built-in personalities, and can share one as a signed single-file pack. The memory system records what an AI has learned about its user, traces each fact back to the conversation it came from, and lets the user read, edit or forget it. Auto routing decides, question by question, whether a local model or an optional online model should answer.
One concrete use is working with documents: a user can attach a contract or a scanned page, ask questions in plain language, then check each answer claim by claim against the wording of the source. Conversations, project sessions and API requests are written into encrypted, tamper-evident records built on Holochain and kept on the device, and any conversation can be exported as a signed receipt others can verify. Downloads are at yourownai.net/download and documentation at docs.yourownai.net.
How to get it
Desktop app
- Open yourownai.net/download and pick the installer for this computer, or download from the project's GitHub releases.
- macOS: Apple Silicon or Intel build. Windows: the Windows 10 and 11 installer. Linux: the .deb package for Ubuntu, Debian or Mint, or the .rpm package for Fedora or openSUSE.
- Install and open the app, then download a model from the in-app catalogue, which checks each one against the machine's memory and graphics hardware before offering it.

Questions people ask
- Can Your Own AI be used without an internet connection?
- Yes. Local models run entirely on the machine, so after a model is downloaded the app's chat, documents, characters and memory work with no connection. Online frontier models and web search are an optional paid service and are not required for local use. source
- Where does Holochain fit into the app?
- Holochain carries the record layer, not the model inference. Conversations, project sessions and requests arriving through the app's local endpoint are written into tamper-evident, cryptographically signed records that are encrypted and stored on the device, while llama.cpp handles the local model work. source
- What does it need to run?
- The project lists macOS 13.3 or later on Apple Silicon, macOS 12 or later on Intel, Windows 10 or 11 in 64-bit, or a 64-bit Linux desktop. Eight gigabytes of memory runs the small models; sixteen gigabytes plus a graphics card with six gigabytes or more opens up most of the catalogue. source
