What is where and what is it for?
where is a Holochain app for group self-awareness: a shared-map tool that lets people in a group show where they are, so the group can see itself instead of guessing. Lightningrod Labs built it as a playground for exploring how remote collaborators can make their shared context visible.
where is a project of Lightningrod Labs, the Holochain-focused studio founded by Eric and Will Harris-Braun. Eric Harris-Braun presented it publicly in a 2022 FOSDEM talk, "Collaborative group self-awareness with Where, a Holochain app", where it was introduced as a playground for group self-awareness on Holochain.
The problem it works on is context. Remote groups rarely know who is where, what they are near, or how their spaces relate, and that missing context makes working together harder. where answers with shared maps: a group makes one or more maps and each member places themselves on them, so the group's emergent "whereness" is visible rather than assumed, and the maps can be reshaped by the group over time.
A group could keep a shared map of the places its members are based, or of the topics and projects they are working on, and each person positions themselves on it. Design notes and an early screencast are linked from the repository, and the project is introduced on the Lightningrod Labs site. The code is prototype work, so its documentation and pinned toolchain describe a historical state rather than a supported release.
Questions people ask
- Who develops where?
- It is a Lightningrod Labs project; the studio was started by Eric and Will Harris-Braun and presents where among its Holochain projects. source
- What does where actually do?
- It provides a pattern for groups to build shared maps that members place themselves on, so a group can see the emergent "whereness" of its collaborators across spaces it evolves itself. source
- Where can I read the design behind it?
- The repository's README points to its design documents, and links an initial prototype screencast. source
