What is We and what is it for?
We is a Holochain runtime for groups: it gives a group a shared space where members add the small apps they need, with each group and each applet running as its own private peer-to-peer network. It was the early version of the project Lightning Rod Labs later continued as Moss, and it exists so a group can compose its own suite of collaboration apps to meet its needs.
The project is developed by Lightning Rod Labs under the name We, and its repository describes it as a Holochain runtime for group collaboration. The repository links to an early write-up on the motivation behind it, and the same organisation's later project Moss records that it used to be called We, identifying this repository as that earlier version.
In We, a group's shared space is assembled from applets: small Holochain apps a group chooses and adds, each with its own rules. A group management app covers membership and settings, and both the group and every applet inside it run as their own private peer-to-peer network, so the space is not one fixed product but a suite the group composes.
A group starting out can add applets from an app library, and the project's development notes describe default apps that include an app library and a feedback board. The repository README is where to learn more, including how applets are built and how the project is set up for development, and its releases page lists the published downloads.
How to get it
Desktop app
- Open the project's releases page on GitHub and download the release for your operating system, following the repository's installation note.
- The repository documents a developer path as well: a Holochain development environment, then clone the repository, compile Holochain and lair, enter the nix shell, install npm packages and start.
Questions people ask
- Does We still install and run today?
- The repository's README still points to its releases page for a download, but every release it lists is marked as an alpha pre-release, and hAppRadar's activity record for the project reads stalled. Nothing on this page is a claim that those builds run on current systems. source
- How is We related to Moss?
- Moss's repository says Moss used to be called We and links to We's early instantiation, so this repository is the earlier We runtime and Moss is the continuation of it by the same organisation. source
- What is an applet in We?
- An applet is a small Holochain app that a group can add to its space; the repository pairs its description of the group management app with a dedicated guide to creating We applets. source
