What is VollaCloudExample and what is it for?

VollaCloudExample is a working Android example that shows how to put Holochain inside a native Kotlin app. It connects to the Volla Cloud Service, installs a packaged Holochain app bundle, and sends greeting messages to a Holochain DNA through zome calls.

VollaCloudExample is published by HelloVolla, the organisation behind the Volla Cloud — a service its own product page describes as a cloud formed by users' networked devices and built on Holochain. The repository is a working example rather than a finished product: its README describes an Android application that demonstrates how to integrate Holochain into a native Kotlin application by connecting to the Volla Cloud Service.

The point of the example is the whole path between an ordinary Android screen and a Holochain network. A Jetpack Compose interface sits above a Kotlin client library, which sits above a Rust bridge that carries calls out to the Holochain conductor, and the app's signing key stays with the app itself so that each request is authorised from there.

Concretely, someone using the example types a greeting and sends it. The app makes a call into an example DNA, where an integrity zome turns away empty messages and the rest are stored and linked to the agent that wrote them, so they can be listed again later. The README walks through each module in turn and is the place to start reading the code.

How to get it

On Android

  1. Clone the repository and open it as a Gradle project; it builds the :app Android module and the :libraries:client module.
  2. Enter the Nix dev shell if you want the Holochain tooling that the project pins, then use the npm scripts to build the zomes and package the hApp bundle.
  3. Run the app module; it connects to the Volla Cloud Service, installs the packaged example hApp, and lets you send a typed greeting as a zome call.

As a library

  1. Add the features you need from libraries/client, the Kotlin library that wraps the FFI bridge, to an Android project.
  2. Use its client to connect to the Volla Cloud Service, install an app bundle, and make zome calls, keeping the agent signing key where your app stores it.

Questions people ask

What does the example DNA actually do?
It defines a Greeting entry and an agent-to-greeting link type, and its validation refuses empty messages. Its coordinator zome creates greetings on the network, fetches one by its action hash, and lists every greeting linked to an agent. source
What is in the repository besides the Android app?
A Kotlin client library that talks to the Holochain conductor, a Rust bridge exposed to Kotlin through UniFFI, the example DNA, and a workdir holding the app manifest and a pre-built example hApp bundle that the app loads from its assets. source
Can I reuse parts of it in my own Android app?
The repository presents its client layer as a reusable Android library: it handles connecting to the Volla Cloud Service, installing an app bundle, and managing the agent's signing key, and it exposes a client to the app above it. source
