What is Vines Android and what is it for?
Vines Android is the Android version of Vines, a group conversation app that Lightning Rod Labs builds for The Weave, a peer-to-peer collaboration environment where groups assemble the tools they need. It gives a group a shared place for threaded discussion, held by the group's own members rather than by a central service.
Vines is described in its own repository as "a conversation capacity for groups in The Weave", the peer-to-peer collaboration environment built by Lightning Rod Labs, where groups assemble the tools they need for working together. This repository, Vines Android, holds the Android version of that app; its README says the app was assembled with a Holochain scaffolding tool and p2pshipyard, and it is published in the same organisation as the main Vines code.
As a conversation tool, Vines is meant to give a group a place to talk that the group itself holds. The maintainer's background note contrasts it with channel-based chat such as Discord or Slack, where the meaning of a channel lives in its name and in how the community uses it, and describes the limits of that model; Vines is instead one capacity a group can add inside its shared space, so its discussions sit alongside the other tools that group uses.
Inside a group space in The Weave, Vines is listed among the available tools as the one for group conversations and messaging, alongside tools such as Notebooks for collaborative notes or Presence for video calls, with each group's data described as hosted on the members' own computers rather than a central service. To learn more, start with the repository README, which documents the developer path for running and packaging the app; the panel on this page carries the dated build and activity facts.
How to get it
Desktop app
- The repository README documents the developer path: enter the Nix shell with 'nix develop', then install dependencies with 'npm install', and run the remaining instructions from inside that shell.
- 'npm run start' brings up two connected nodes with their respective UIs and the Holochain Playground; 'AGENTS=3 npm run network' bootstraps a larger test network by substituting the number of nodes.
- 'npm run package' writes 'vines.webhapp' into the workdir folder, which the README says is what to distribute so that the Holochain Launcher can install it.
- Caveat from the census: this project is recorded as stalled, with the last change to the repository on 2 October 2024, so the README documents a path rather than a currently verified installation.
Questions people ask
- Is Vines Android a separate app from Vines?
- It is the Android version of the Vines app: this repository holds the Android build, made with a Holochain scaffolding tool and p2pshipyard, while the main Vines code lives in the lightningrodlabs/vines repository. source
- Is Vines a stand-alone messenger?
- It is designed as one tool inside The Weave, Lightning Rod Labs' group collaboration environment, rather than as a stand-alone product; coverage of The Weave lists Vines among the tools a group can add to its space, described as group conversations and messaging. source
