What is Treepeople and what is it for?
Treepeople is a Holochain app for recording visits to trees. It exists so that people who spend time with particular trees can keep and share a record of those visits themselves, rather than a central service holding that record.
Treepeople is a small Holochain app from Lightningrod Labs for recording visits to trees. The repository holds a Rust-based DNA and a web interface, and its README is written for developers who want to build and run it themselves rather than for someone looking for a finished app to install.
The idea is plain and human: keep a record of the times you spend with particular trees. Each visit is written by the person who made it and shared through a peer-to-peer network instead of being collected in a company's database, so the record of a tree's visitors stays with the people who wrote it.
The repository documents one concrete way to try it: running npm start brings up two connected nodes with their own interfaces on a single machine, so a pair of people can record and share visits locally. It is a historical project — the last recorded activity in the repository is from August 2023, and its setup steps are written for the Holochain development environment of that period.
How to get it
From the command line
- Enter the project's nix shell and install dependencies with npm install.
- Run npm start to bring up two connected Holochain nodes with their own interfaces on one machine, or npm run network 3 for a larger local network.
- Packaging with npm run package produces treepeople.webhapp in the workdir folder, which the README says is what the Holochain Launcher installs.
Questions people ask
- How is Treepeople run?
- The README describes a development setup: enter the project's nix shell, install dependencies with npm install, then run npm start for two connected nodes with their own interfaces, or npm run network 3 for a larger local network. It also describes packaging a treepeople.webhapp for installation with the Holochain Launcher. source
- Are there published releases?
- The repository's releases page lists no releases, so there is no packaged build offered for download. The README says packaging the project produces a treepeople.webhapp in the workdir folder for distribution. source
- Who maintains Treepeople?
- The project sits in the GitHub organisation of Lightningrod Labs, the Holochain development lab whose site says it was started by Eric and Will Harris-Braun. source
