What is toric-desktop and what is it for?
toric-desktop is the desktop app for Toric, a network on Holochain where people who publish AI models record what a model is and how it was made, and other people check whether that record holds up. The app lets someone take part in that checking from their own computer, and the resulting trust scores are shared across the people taking part rather than held by one operator.
Toric is a network on Holochain for checking the integrity of AI model manifests, where a manifest is the publisher's own record of a model: what it is and how it was made. People publish such records and other people validate them, and the network keeps a shared, inspectable account of which records hold up under that scrutiny. toric-desktop is the packaged way to take part in that work from a normal computer.
The validation runs as a sealed round. A validator commits to a verdict before seeing anyone else's, and only afterwards reveals it, so a later change of answer is visible. Each validator has something at stake on being right, and the weight a verdict carries grows with that validator's record of past validation work rather than with who they are. What comes out is a trust score attached to a model record, kept available and traceable back through the validations behind it.
One concrete example is the app itself. Rather than assuming a Holochain setup already exists, toric-desktop bundles the Holochain conductor and the keystore it uses, installs the Toric app into them, and serves the interface over a direct connection to the local conductor, so a validator launched this way works against its own node. The repository README documents the source-run steps, and the main Toric repository carries the wider design.
How to get it
Desktop app
- Set up the Holochain development environment, then run yarn setup in the toric-desktop repository to fetch the verified binaries and write the configuration files.
- Build the Toric app bundle in the nomicco/toric repository with npm run package, then copy workdir/toric.webhapp into the pouch/ directory of toric-desktop.
- Run yarn dev to start the app, or use yarn build:linux, yarn build:mac-arm64, yarn build:mac-x64 or yarn build:windows to produce a packaged build.
Questions people ask
- Does the desktop app need Holochain installed separately?
- The app bundles the Holochain conductor and the keystore it uses, and installs the Toric app into them, so it brings its own runtime. A separate Holochain conductor does not need to be running beforehand. source
- What network does the app connect to?
- Its bootstrap and signal endpoints are served from a self-hosted bootstrap instance, and the project's own notes describe the current endpoints as development infrastructure. The same notes warn that changing those network addresses after deployment splits one network into separate parts. source
- Where can I read about how validation works?
- The main Toric repository sets out the four parts of the app, including the commit-reveal validation protocol, alongside the validator client and the packaging step that produces the app bundle. source
