What is ShareFeed and what is it for?
ShareFeed is an app that lets a group of people share websites, videos and other web pages with each other, so the links a few trusted people find land in one shared feed instead of an open timeline. The shares are stored by the participants themselves on the Holochain network, and a share can carry a short note or a highlighted passage from the page it points to.
ShareFeed is an app for sharing links with a group of people you already know. Someone reading on the web can send a page, video or article to a group they belong to, and everyone in that group sees the shares in one feed. The work is developed in the Lightningrod Labs GitHub organisation, and the app stores what the group shares on the Holochain network rather than in an account held by a company.
The idea is a shared shelf of links for a small circle — a family, a reading group, a team. A share can carry a short note or a highlighted passage from the page, so the reason for sending it travels with the link. The interface is deliberately plain, written for people at any level of technical comfort who would rather see what a few trusted people have found than scroll an open feed.
In use, someone opens a page in their browser, clicks the ShareFeed button, adds an optional note, and the item appears in the desktop app's feed for their group. The desktop app is a standalone installer for Windows, macOS and Linux, and the browser part is a Chrome extension that talks to the Holochain conductor running on the same computer. Install steps for both are in the project's repository README.
How to get it
Desktop app
- Download the installer for your platform from the sharefeed-desktop releases page.
- Windows: run ShareFeed-Setup.exe.
- macOS: open ShareFeed.dmg and drag ShareFeed to Applications.
- Linux: run ShareFeed.AppImage, or install the .deb package.
In a browser
- Download sharefeed-extension.zip from the releases page and unzip it to a folder.
- Open Chrome and go to chrome://extensions.
- Turn on Developer mode, choose Load unpacked and select the unzipped folder.
- The ShareFeed icon then appears in the browser toolbar; the extension talks to the Holochain conductor running on the same machine.
Questions people ask
- What do I need to run ShareFeed?
- The desktop app comes from the sharefeed-desktop releases page as a platform installer for Windows, macOS or Linux. The browser part is a Chrome extension: download sharefeed-extension.zip from the releases page, unzip it, and load the folder through Load unpacked in Chrome's developer mode. source
- Where does a group's content live?
- Shares are stored on the Holochain network across the participants' own devices, and each person has their own cryptographic keypair rather than an account held by a service. The browser extension connects directly to a Holochain conductor running locally on the same machine, using fixed ports for the admin and app interfaces. source
