What is Service Logger and what is it for?
Service Logger is an internal Holo component that records the hosting a host carries out on a client's behalf and turns those records into proof-of-service invoices. It exists so that hosting work has a signed, countable record that can be invoiced, rather than being estimated or taken on trust.
Service Logger was built inside Holo's own hosting stack as an internal component. Its job was bookkeeping: measuring the hosting a host carried out on a client's behalf and keeping a log of it, so that hosting work had a record rather than an estimate. The repository groups it with two sibling components, the Holo Hosting App and HoloFuel, and it is packaged as a Holochain DNA and exercised with Holochain's developer tooling rather than shipped as an end-user app.
The idea is a chain of consent between two people. A client that wants hosting done logs a Request. When the host finishes a block of hosting, the host asks the client to sign, and that signature turns the work into a signed service log. The logger keeps a running tally of unpaid logs, and once that tally crosses a threshold configured in the Hosting App it triggers the generation of an invoice through a bridge to HoloFuel.
A concrete picture of how the pieces fit: exercising the invoice path means building the HoloFuel and Holo-Hosting-App DNAs, copying them into Service Logger's dist/ directory and running the project's bridging tests, because the three components were designed to be exercised together. The repository README is the main place to learn more, and it labels the Service Logger RFC it links as in progress. The repository's last recorded update is dated 29 April 2022, so the workflow the README documents reflects an earlier Holochain toolchain.
Questions people ask
- Is Service Logger an app I can install and run?
- Its README documents an internal Holo component and gives only a development workflow — building the DNA and running the project's tests — with no user-facing install route or deployment instructions. source
- Where is Service Logger documented?
- The repository README is the project's documentation; it also links a Service Logger RFC, which the README labels as in progress. source
- How do the service logger, HoloFuel and the Holo Hosting App relate?
- The README's bridging tests require the HoloFuel and Holo-Hosting-App DNAs to be built and copied into the service logger's dist/ directory, so the three components are tested together rather than in isolation. source
