What is Holochain-Kangaroo Electron and what is it for?

It is a reusable template that packages a Holochain app into a standalone desktop program built on Electron. This copy of the template is configured to build the desktop releases of the Requests and Offers app.

This repository is a reusable template, called a kangaroo, for wrapping a Holochain application in an Electron shell so it can be distributed as an ordinary desktop program. A developer points the template at their own app, and the repository then builds installers for macOS, Windows and Linux. This copy is configured for Requests and Offers, a Holochain app from the same community, and its releases are that app's desktop downloads.

Using the template means editing kangaroo.config.ts to set the application's identifier and product name, placing the app's packaged .webhapp file in the pouch folder, and running the build commands. The wrapper bundles the Holochain conductor, so a person who installs the finished program does not assemble a Holochain environment themselves, and it uses version numbers to decide which releases of an app can share the same stored data.

As configured here, the repository produces the desktop releases of Requests and Offers: installers for Apple Silicon and Intel Macs, Windows, Debian and Ubuntu, and a universal AppImage, with a Homebrew option for macOS. How to get it

Desktop app

Download the installer for your platform from the repository's releases page: macOS (Apple Silicon or Intel) DMG, Windows setup EXE, Debian/Ubuntu DEB, or universal AppImage.
On macOS you can instead install the Homebrew cask: brew tap happenings-community/requests-and-offers, then brew install --cask happenings-community/requests-and-offers/requests-and-offers.

Desktop app

Use the repository as a template or fork it.
Set appId and productName in kangaroo.config.ts.
Run yarn setup, then paste your app's .webhapp file into the pouch folder.
Run yarn dev to test it, then build with yarn build:linux, yarn build:mac-arm64, yarn build:mac-x64 or yarn build:windows.
