What is PromptMesh and what is it for?

PromptMesh is a Holochain app for sharing AI prompts, where peers add suggestions to each other's prompts and each node relays the combined result to the language model it is using. It exists so a prompt can be improved by a group without a central service holding the prompts or the models.

PromptMesh is an open-source project on GitHub that relays AI prompts between peers. It is built on Holochain, a framework in which each person runs their own copy of an app and those copies share data directly rather than through one company's servers. The repository introduces it in one line as a peer-to-peer AI prompt relay on Holochain.

The idea is to improve a prompt the way a group improves a document. One peer writes a prompt and posts it; other peers add suggestions and improvements, which the app keeps linked to the original. Each node then gathers the suggestions, sends the combined prompt to the language model it has chosen, and posts the refined result back for the others. Every node uses its own model connection, so the interface can work with a model running on your own machine.

A practical starting point is the repository's UI-only route, which works on any operating system: install Ollama, pull the llama3 model, start it so the browser can reach it, then open ui/index.html — the interface falls back to demo mode, so the relay and the model connection work before Holochain itself is running. The README then walks through the full peer-to-peer setup with Nix and the hc command-line tools, for Linux and macOS or for Windows through WSL2. The code and current setup notes live at https://github.com/ta10101/promptmesh.

How to get it

In a browser

  1. Install Ollama and pull a model: ollama pull llama3
  2. Start Ollama with browser access allowed: OLLAMA_ORIGINS=* ollama serve (on Windows set OLLAMA_ORIGINS to * in System Environment Variables and restart Ollama)
  3. Open ui/index.html from the repository in your browser — the interface falls back to demo mode, so the prompt relay works without Holochain running
  4. Choose a model provider in the LLM bar at the top of the interface; Ollama / llama3 is the default and needs no API key

As a library

  1. Install Nix, then enter the Holochain dev shell: nix develop github:holochain/holochain
  2. Add the Rust wasm target: rustup target add wasm32-unknown-unknown
  3. Build the zomes: cargo build --release --target wasm32-unknown-unknown
  4. Pack the DNA and hApp: hc dna pack dnas/promptmesh/workdir --recursive && hc app pack workdir --recursive
  5. Run it: hc sandbox generate workdir/promptmesh.happ --run=8888, then open ui/index.html — it connects to the conductor at ws://localhost:8888
  6. On Windows, run the same steps inside WSL2 and open the interface from the Windows browser
  7. Build from the project's source: https://github.com/ta10101/promptmesh

Questions people ask

Can I try PromptMesh without running Holochain?
Yes. The repository states that you can use the interface and the AI relay without Holochain running, because it falls back to demo mode automatically. source
What do I need before opening the PromptMesh interface?
Ollama installed and a model pulled, such as llama3, with Ollama started in a way that allows browser access; the repository's full peer-to-peer setup additionally uses Nix, the Rust wasm target and the hc command-line tools. source
Which models can PromptMesh send prompts to?
The interface offers Ollama, Anthropic and OpenAI, switched in the LLM bar at the top of the app. Ollama is the default and needs no API key, while Anthropic and OpenAI require one. source
