What is profiles and what is it for?

profiles is a small, reusable module for Holochain apps that handles people's profiles — at least a nickname — so each app does not have to build that feature itself. An app includes it as one part, and the people using that app can create a profile and be recognised by name.

profiles is a small, reusable module for Holochain apps, kept in the coasys organisation as a fork of the earlier holochain-open-dev profiles module. Its job is narrow: give an app a place where people can create a profile and be recognised by a nickname, instead of every app building that feature from scratch. hAppRadar's activity reading for the repository is stalled, and this page treats the project as historical.

The module is meant to be included in other apps rather than run by itself. It ships in two halves: a backend zome that stores profiles inside whichever app includes it, and a frontend package of web components for the browser side. The upstream README describes it as assuming as little as possible about the app that hosts it, so the same piece can be dropped into quite different projects.

A chat or community app that includes the module can show a member's nickname alongside their contributions instead of an unrecognisable address, and let members present a profile to others. Because profiles live in the host app's own data store, each app keeps its own set. The upstream module's repository and its documentation site are where to read further.

How to get it

As a library

  1. profiles is used inside another Holochain app rather than run on its own: its zome is added to that app's DNA and its frontend package to the app's web interface, following the upstream module documentation.
  2. hAppRadar's activity reading for the repository is stalled and the latest listed release dates from 2021; the steps above describe the module's documented shape, not a currently verified build.

Questions people ask

Is profiles a standalone app?
No. It is packaged as a zome plus a frontend package that is designed to be included in other Holochain apps' DNAs, with the host app providing everything around it. source
Is profiles still maintained?
hAppRadar's activity reading for the repository is stalled. Its releases list ends at a pre-release dated 04 June 2021, and no later release is recorded. source
Where can I read the documentation?
Through the upstream module repository, which links to its installation instructions and documentation. The address recorded for this project on hAppRadar did not resolve when checked. source
