What is Perspective Diff Sync and what is it for?

Perspective Diff Sync is a Holochain component that keeps one shared set of links — the connections that make up a shared knowledge space — in step between the people who take part in it. It exists so that several people can edit the same shared space separately and still end up looking at the same picture, the way a shared document reconciles everyone's edits.

Perspective Diff Sync is a Holochain DNA built to keep a shared set of links in step between the people who hold it. Its repository states the idea in one line: "Git like holochain syncing DNA for sharing of mutation to a shared perspective." The thing being shared is a graph of links, and this component carries each participant's additions and removals to the others. AD4M's platform documentation names it as the default sync language for the shared spaces it calls Neighbourhoods, and records that it was authored by Coasys.

A shared space has no central copy that everyone has to agree with. Each participant keeps their own replica, made of committed revisions rather than a single master version, and Perspective Diff Sync discovers what other participants have committed, pulls it in, and reconciles the results so the replicas converge on the same view. Consistency is handled by a CRDT-style algorithm, and because the component is applied as a template, every shared space runs as its own isolated network instead of sharing data with unrelated spaces.

One documented example comes from Flux, a social toolkit built on AD4M, which lists the Perspective Diff Sync DNA among the Holochain DNAs it uses to store link data for AD4M perspectives. AD4M's Neighbourhoods documentation explains how a space applies this sync language as a template and how other participants join it. The project's own code, one-line README and release history are at github.com/coasys/perspective-diff-sync.

How to get it

As a library

  1. This component is not installed on its own. It is distributed as a built-in sync language of the AD4M runtime and reused by applications built on AD4M, such as Flux.
  2. The AD4M documentation describes using it as a language template: a shared space applies the template with a uuid and a name, which creates an isolated network for that space rather than sharing one pool of data.
