What is path-explorer and what is it for?
path-explorer is a reusable module for Holochain that reads and browses the named paths recorded in an app's distributed data store. It exists so that developers building or studying a Holochain network can see the path and link structure that network has built up, instead of querying each path one at a time.
path-explorer is a reusable module for Holochain rather than a finished, openable app. It gathers code that reads and browses the named paths recorded in an app's distributed data store, so that a developer can inspect the structure a network has accumulated instead of querying one path at a time. The repository describes it in its own words as a Holochain module for exploring all paths available in a distributed hash table.
Paths are how a Holochain app keeps its shared data findable. A path is a label a network agrees on — a category, a thread, a list — and entries are filed under it so others can find and follow them. That quiet bookkeeping is hard to see from the outside, and path-explorer is the instrument for looking at it: a small, reusable piece of tooling a developer adds to a project when they need to know what paths exist, how they are nested, and what sits under each one.
The clearest example is the one the repository ships itself: a basic task-management demo app called Tasker: Playground, built expressly for trying out the module's features and also carrying profile and agent-directory modules. The project is historical rather than active — the repository is archived, and its README says the code moved on to other Lightningrod Labs repositories. A published npm package carries its browsing elements. The repository README is the place to read further.
How to get it
As a library
- Use it from inside a Holochain development project; the repository documents a setup script, bash ./scripts/install-hc-tools.sh, for the tooling it needs.
- To see its behaviour, the repository includes a small task-management demo app called Tasker: Playground, run with npm install followed by npm run devtest.
- A package named @ddd-qc/path-explorer is also published to npm and described there as elements for browsing paths and links.
- The repository is archived, and this setup is documented for the archived code rather than presented as a supported or current installation.
Questions people ask
- Is path-explorer still maintained?
- No. The repository is archived, and its README carries a notice that the repo is archived and the code moved to other Lightningrod Labs repositories. source
- Can I install it as an app and open it?
- It is not an app in that sense; it is a module used from inside a Holochain development project. The repository documents a setup script and a demo playground app, and a package named @ddd-qc/path-explorer is published to npm, described there as lit-happ elements for browsing paths and links. source
