What is net-stats-daemon and what is it for?

net-stats-daemon is a host-side service built for HoloPorts that gathers a short set of operational details about a host and reports them to Holo's network statistics service. It exists so that a Holo network can see which HoloPorts are online and what they are running, without an operator reporting it by hand.

net-stats-daemon was written inside Holo's Holo-Host organisation as an HPOS daemon, meaning a service belonging to HPOS, the operating system HoloPorts run. Its stated job is to collect statistics about a host and push them to a database through Holo's match-service-api. The repository names a codeowner and a consulted reviewer, and notes that architecture and functionality decisions are kept in a docs folder.

A HoloPort is a host machine on a Holo network such as devNet, alphaNet or flexNet. The daemon reads which network the host is on, which channel and revision of HPOS it runs, its model, whether SSH is enabled, its ZeroTier and internet addresses and its Holoport ID. It signs the collected payload with the host's private key before sending it, so a report identifies the host that produced it.

The reports were made visible through Holo's holoports-monitor web tools, which present the most recent report from each HoloPort seen in the previous 24 hours as a filterable table, alongside a browser connectivity tester. hAppRadar's census records the repository's last push in August 2024 and rates its activity as stalled, so the daemon is best read as a historical part of Holo's host tooling; the repository README above is the place to read the details.

How to get it

From the command line

  1. This is a host-side HoloPort component rather than a published end-user application; the repository documents running the binary from a source checkout with a Rust toolchain.
  2. Set the DEVICE_SEED_DEFAULT_PASSWORD environment variable, which the binary needs to unlock the hpos-config.toml keypair file whose location is hard-coded in the keypair.rs module.
  3. Run the binary, for example with cargo run, and optionally set RUST_LOG=DEBUG for debugging output.

Questions people ask

Does net-stats-daemon run on an ordinary computer?
The repository documents it as an HPOS daemon, a host-side service for HoloPorts, with prerequisites that include a HoloPort's hpos-config.toml file and its seed password; the same README shows running the binary from a source checkout for debugging. It is not presented as a general-purpose desktop application. source
What happens to the statistics it collects?
The daemon signs the collected payload with the HoloPort's private key and pushes it to a database through Holo's match-service-api. source
How can the collected statistics be read?
Holo's public hp-stats-api reads the stored data; it describes its host list-available endpoint as merging ZeroTier controller data with reports from a Holoport's netstatsd, and also exposes uptime and network capacity endpoints. source
