What is Ludos and what is it for?

Ludos is a Holochain app from Lightningrod Labs that a group uses to build a dungeon together and then play in it. It is made for shared sessions, where the dungeon changes as several people work on it at once.

Ludos is a Holochain app for collaborative dungeon building and playing, published by Lightningrod Labs. Its repository describes it in a single line: a Holochain app where a group builds a dungeon together and then plays in it, with the real-time collaboration delivered by the Syn library.

The idea is social rather than solo. Instead of one person authoring a dungeon and passing it on, participants share the same space and watch it change as others work on it. Ludos is run as a Holochain app on a participant's own machine, installed through the Holochain Launcher, which is the route the project's README documents.

One concrete case is a group session in which a player lays out rooms while another adds to them, with everyone seeing the map change as it happens. The repository is the place to read more, and its releases page holds the files the README's installation steps refer to.

How to get it

Desktop app

  1. Install and run the Holochain Launcher, then choose Install New App; the README says Ludos appears there for installation.
  2. Alternatively, download the webapp file from the repository's releases page and use Select From Filesystem in the Launcher to install it.
  3. The README carries no version caveat, but the repository's most recent release is v0.1.0, dated 22 May 2023 and described as compatible with launcher 0.9.4 (holochain 0.1.3), so these steps should be read as historical.

In a browser

  1. Clone the repository and enter its Nix shell with nix develop, then run npm install.
  2. Run npm run dev and open localhost:5000 in a browser; the README says the UI runs there.
  3. This is the repository's documented development workflow rather than a deployed app, and it shares the same May 2023 age as the rest of the repository.

Questions people ask

Where do I get Ludos?
The README's installation route is the Holochain Launcher, either from its app list or from a webapp file downloaded from the repository's releases page. The releases page is where the project publishes those files. source
Is Ludos still maintained?
Its most recent release, v0.1.0, is dated 22 May 2023, and hAppRadar's own activity reading for the repository is stalled, so the material here should be treated as a historical record. The releases listing is where any newer material would appear. source
How does the real-time collaboration work?
The README states that real-time collaboration is delivered by Syn, a Holochain library for real-time collaborative tools. The repository is the source for that description. source
