What is hpos-service-crates and what is it for?

hpos-service-crates is a set of small Rust building blocks that connect a host system to a Holochain conductor and manage the apps installed on it. It exists so a host can turn a written list of Holochain apps into an installed set, instead of a person installing each app by hand.

hpos-service-crates is a Rust codebase published by the Holo-Host organisation. It is a Cargo workspace — a group of crates that build together — and its members are named for the jobs they do: configuring a Holochain conductor, connecting a host to that conductor, and managing Holochain apps already installed on it. It is building-block code for other software, not an application with a screen.

The stated purpose fits in one line: installing self-hosted Holochain apps from a YAML file into a conductor. The idea is to write down in a plain text file what should be installed, and let a program read that list, talk to the conductor, and set the apps up. That replaces installing each app by hand into a running conductor.

One concrete example comes from the project's own changelog: work to install HoloFuel and the app it calls HHA together as a single bundle, carrying the membrane proofs and properties they need to join the same network. The workspace manifest, which lists every crate in the set, and the changelog beside it are the best places to read further.

Questions people ask

Can I install hpos-service-crates on my own computer?
No end-user installer is documented. The repository holds a set of Rust crates meant to be used inside other software, and it publishes no releases. source
Is hpos-service-crates current with Holochain today?
Its changelog records compatibility work against a Holochain 0.4.0 development build, which places it in the ecosystem's earlier generation. It is best read as a historical project rather than as maintained software. source
