What is HoloKudos and what is it for?
HoloKudos is a peer recognition app where people give each other short signed notes of thanks, called kudos, for work worth noticing. Its stated purpose is that this record of reputation belongs to the person it describes, written and signed by the giver rather than managed by anyone who could quietly change or remove it.
HoloKudos is a peer recognition project: a way for people to thank each other for work worth noticing and to keep that record of thanks. Its stated purpose is that reputation should belong to the person it describes — the notes are written and signed by the giver rather than held by an administrator who could silently edit or delete them.
Giving a kudo means picking a colleague, choosing one of six categories — Collaboration, Code Quality, Mentorship, Innovation, Helpfulness or Communication — and writing a short note. The note is signed with the giver's own private key, so authorship cannot be forged, and it is shared with the other peers running the app instead of sitting in one organisation's database. Each participant also keeps a local chain of their own activity, giving a tamper-evident history of what they have done.
As a concrete example, the repository ships a script that starts two agents on one machine so a kudo can pass between them over the network on localhost — a way to watch the peer-to-peer flow working before building the Windows or Linux desktop bundle. The project repository is where to learn more: it documents the build steps for the full app, the browser demo, and the categories a kudo can be given for.
How to get it
Desktop app
- Install the Holochain toolchain once from the happ directory: ./setup.sh
- Requires Rust and Node.js; on Windows use WSL2 (Linux and macOS run it directly)
- Compile the zomes, pack the DNA and hApp, and build the Tauri installer: cd ../desktop && ./build.sh
- Installers are written to desktop/src-tauri/target/release/bundle/ — a Windows setup .exe and a Linux .deb
In a browser
- Open demo/index.html in a browser — the repository states that no installation is needed
- The demo runs without a Holochain conductor, so it shows the interface without a working network of peers
From the command line
- Install the toolchain once: cd happ && ./setup.sh
- Compile and pack: ./build.sh
- Start one agent with ./run.sh, or two agents with ./run_multi.sh to see peer-to-peer traffic on localhost
- Open happ/ui/index.html?port=<APP_PORT>, using the port printed in the terminal
Questions people ask
- Do I need to install anything to try HoloKudos?
- No — the repository includes an interactive browser demo at demo/index.html that needs no installation and no Holochain conductor. Building the full app does require the Holochain toolchain, Rust and Node.js. source
- Where are kudos stored?
- The project documents each kudo as signed with the giver's ed25519 agent key and stored on the distributed hash table, with every action also recorded on the author's own source chain as a tamper-evident local history. source
- What can a kudo be given for?
- The repository lists six categories: Collaboration, Code Quality, Mentorship, Innovation, Helpfulness and Communication. source
