What is Smart India Hackathon Project and what is it for?
It is an IoT application that records sensor readings from connected devices in a Holochain DNA, so what each device reported can be checked against a second copy in an ordinary database. It exists to give an IoT deployment a verifiable record of its own data rather than leaving that record in one server's hands alone.
The repository describes the project as a Smart India Hackathon entry. It is a full-stack Internet-of-Things application built from three parts: a Node.js backend that receives sensor readings, a React interface for working with them, and a Holochain layer whose job is distributed data integrity alongside the ordinary database.
The Holochain layer exists for verification, not just storage. Each reading sent to the backend is written into the iot_data DNA as a signed entry, and a separate integrity check reports whether the values held in MongoDB match what the DNA holds. The README states that the DNA is real compiled Rust rather than a placeholder. If no conductor is running, readings still save to MongoDB with a SHA-256 hash chain, simply without a DNA entry reference.
A concrete example is a device reporting its sensor values to the backend: the same reading ends up both in the database and as a signed DNA entry, so the two can be compared later. The README's "Running the Project" section explains how to build the DNA to WASM, start a local conductor sandbox and start the backend, and it points to holochain/scripts/build.sh for the linker flags the WASM build requires.
How to get it
Desktop app
- Install a Rust toolchain with the wasm32-unknown-unknown target. On Windows without Visual Studio Build Tools, the README recommends a MinGW-w64 GCC toolchain and the stable-x86_64-pc-windows-gnu Rust toolchain instead.
- In the backend directory, install dependencies with npm install.
- Build the DNA and pack the app from the backend directory with npm run holochain:build. The README notes this compiles both zomes to WASM and writes holochain/workdir/iot_app.happ.
- Start a local Holochain conductor sandbox with npm run holochain:start, leaving it running in its own terminal. It writes its connection details to holochain/.sandbox-data/ports.json.
- Start the backend with npm run dev. It reads the conductor's ports file automatically and writes each sensor reading into the DNA.
- In the frontend directory, run npm install and then npm run dev for the React interface.
- To reach the local server from external IoT devices, the README suggests running ngrok http 3000.

Questions people ask
- Is the Holochain part of this project real, or a placeholder?
- The README states that the iot_data DNA is real, compiled Rust (HDK/HDI) rather than a placeholder, and that the build compiles both zomes to WASM and packs holochain/workdir/iot_app.happ. source
- What happens if the Holochain conductor is not running?
- The README says the backend degrades gracefully: readings still save to MongoDB with the SHA-256 hash chain, just without a DNA entry reference. source
- Where are the build requirements for the DNA documented?
- The README points to holochain/scripts/build.sh for the exact linker flags, noting that getrandom needs an explicit custom backend on wasm32-unknown-unknown and that Holochain's host functions need --import-undefined at link time. source
