What is Holochain Agent Skills and what is it for?

Holochain Agent Skills is a package of written instructions that teaches AI coding assistants how to build Holochain apps. It gives those assistants a shared reference for designing, coding, testing and packaging a Holochain project, so a developer can ask for Holochain work in plain words and get answers that follow the framework.

AI coding assistants already know how to write software, but they rarely know the particular shape of a Holochain project. Holochain Agent Skills is a package of written instructions that supplies that knowledge. It follows the Agent Skills Open Standard, a shared format for skill files, so assistants including Claude Code, opencode, GitHub Copilot, Cursor and Gemini CLI can read the same package.

The package is reference material rather than a running application. It covers the stages of Holochain development — architecture and data modelling, scaffolding a project, implementing zomes, testing, and packaging — and is written for Holochain 0.7, checked against a reference app that compiles. A developer's assistant loads the relevant reference file when a task matches it.

In practice a developer installs the skill into a project, restarts their assistant, and then asks for Holochain work in ordinary words: to scaffold a new app, or to design a data model for a marketplace listing with status transitions, for example. The assistant follows the skill's workflow for that task. The project's documentation site is the place to start.

How to get it

From the command line

From the root of the project that should get the skill, extract the release archive into the skills directory your assistant reads, for example: mkdir -p .claude/skills && curl -fsSL <release archive URL> | tar -xz -C .claude/skills — replace .claude/skills with your harness's path if it differs.
Or clone the repository, run bun run build, then run node bin/install.mjs install --yes from your project. The installer detects the harnesses the project uses and installs into all of them; --global, --target, --dry-run and --link change its scope and behaviour.
Restart the assistant afterwards, since most harnesses read skills once at startup, then ask a Holochain question or invoke the skill by name (/holochain in Claude Code).

Add the repository as a Nix flake input and use lib.mkSkillsHook to write the skill into your harness skill directories, or set flake = false and consume the skills/holochain subdirectory directly.
