What is Holo Web Conductor and what is it for?

Holo Web Conductor is a browser extension that runs Holochain applications in a web page without the visitor installing Holochain software. It keeps the visitor's keys in the browser and runs the application's own logic there, while a relay service handles the shared network side.

Holochain applications are peer-to-peer, so each person taking part normally has to install and run a conductor — the software that keeps their keys, runs the application's logic and talks to the network. For people who simply want to open a web address and start using an app, that requirement is a barrier. Holo Web Conductor is an attempt to remove it.

It is a browser extension that acts as the visitor's own conductor. It creates and keeps the visitor's cryptographic keys inside the browser, runs the application's compiled logic locally, and signs the actions the visitor takes. The part a browser cannot do well — holding shared data and staying online for other people — is left to a separate relay service. Web apps reach the extension through a companion client library.

An app built for it can try the extension first and fall back to an ordinary Holochain connection when the extension is not installed, so one page can serve both kinds of visitor. Running it in production means hosting the application bundle and relaying network traffic through a linker, optionally adding a joining service that handles onboarding. The project's own guides for application developers and for deployment are the place to start.

How to get it

As a library

  1. Install the client package in your web app: npm install @holo-host/web-conductor-client.
  2. Check whether the extension is present, connect a WebConductorAppClient to a linker address, and fall back to the standard Holochain client when the extension is not installed.

In a browser

  1. Install the Holo Web Conductor extension for Chrome or Firefox; the project's repository carries the extension source and states that HWC is alpha software whose APIs may change between releases and that it is not yet recommended for production use.
  2. Open an HWC-compatible Holochain site, whose page script connects to the extension, and let the extension keep your keys in the browser.

Questions people ask

Do I need Holochain installed on my computer to use an app through Holo Web Conductor?
No. You install a browser extension instead of a local conductor; it stores your keys in the browser and runs the application's logic there, reaching the network through a relay service. source
What can the browser node do, and what can it not do?
It runs as a zero-arc node: it does not gossip or store shared data for other people, and it fetches everything from the network through the relay. Every read is a network round-trip, so there is no offline reading. source
Is it ready for production use?
The repository describes HWC as alpha software under active development whose APIs may change between releases, and says it is not yet recommended for production use. source
