What is Holo Hosting App and what is it for?

Holo Hosting App is a Holochain app that gave app providers and hosts a shared space to arrange the hosting of apps on Holo. App providers listed their apps and hosting preferences so an app became available for hosting, while hosts declared which app they intended to host, kept private signed service logs, and could compile invoices for the providers they served.

The app was developed in the Holo-Host organisation as the packaged Holochain logic behind a hosting app for Holo, with a companion repository holding the matching user interface. Its own README recorded the project as "Closed-Alpha" at the stage of "early development and testing", which is the status a reader should keep in mind for everything below.

It is easiest to picture as a matchmaking workspace for two kinds of participant. Someone with an app writes down what the app is and how they want it hosted, so it becomes available for hosting and a domain name is registered for it. Someone willing to host then states which app they intend to host, keeps a private signed log of the service they provide, and can assemble invoices for the provider.

A concrete way to see it work is described in the repository itself: build the project and start two DNA agents locally, pointing the second agent at the first one's networking details, so a pair of participants can be spun up against a local network to exercise the interface. The repository README and the companion UI repository are where to read further.

How to get it

Desktop app

  1. Install the Nix package manager, which the repository's build and test commands assume, and clone https://github.com/Holo-Host/holo-hosting-app-redux
  2. Clone the holochain-rust repository into the same folder as the checked-out project — the README states this is required to run the hc test with the nodejs_conductor from holochain-rust in this dev-mode repo.
  3. Run `nix-test` in the project to run its tests, or `nix-build` to build the DNA; the built `.dna.json` appears in the `dist/` folder.
  4. To bring up two participants for UI testing, the README's agent steps use `npm run start-dna-agent1` and `npm run start-dna-agent2`, setting HC_N3H_PATH in both scripts and adding the first agent's HC_N3H_BOOTSTRAP_NODE and HC_N3H_IPC_URI values to the second agent's script.
  5. These are the maintainers' early developer and testing instructions from a Closed-Alpha repository and are not an end-user installation path.

As a library

  1. Build the packaged application logic from the repository with `nix-build`; the resulting `.dna.json` is placed in the `dist/` folder for use with a Holochain conductor.
  2. The repository also carries a document describing the KV Store API required for a key-value store to communicate with the hosting app.

Questions people ask

What stage did Holo Hosting App reach?
Its README recorded the project as "Closed-Alpha", describing it as early development and testing rather than finished software; the catalog page lists its activity as stalled. source
How is the app's logic packaged and connected?
The repository documents building a DNA with `nix-build`, which places a `.dna.json` file in the `dist/` folder, and carries a document describing the KV Store API needed for a key-value store to communicate with the hosting app. source
Is there a user interface for it?
A companion repository in the same organisation pairs a React, Redux and Material UI interface with the hosting app's DNA so that hosts and app providers have a screen to interact through. source
