What is holo-auto-installer and what is it for?
holo-auto-installer is a management tool for HoloPorts, the always-on machines that host Holochain apps for other people. It reads a list of the apps a HoloPort is meant to be running and installs the ones that are missing while removing the ones that are no longer on the list.
holo-auto-installer is a management tool built inside the Holo-Host organisation, the group behind the HoloPort — a small always-on machine that runs Holochain apps on behalf of other people. Its documented job is to keep the set of apps installed on a HoloPort in step with what that HoloPort is supposed to be running, so an operator does not have to add or remove apps by hand each time the list changes. The repository calls it an auto-pilot for managing hosted apps on a HoloPort.
Operators describe the desired set of apps in a YAML file rather than through a graphical interface. The file separates apps the host is expected to provide from apps a participant has chosen to self-host; each entry carries an app id, a version, and optionally the URLs its app package and interface are fetched from. The tool's contributor notes describe two behaviours on a HoloPort: install apps that should be present but are not, and remove apps that are present but no longer qualify.
A small worked example appears in the project's own documentation: a YAML list with one entry naming app id hha, a version, and a download URL for the app package. The repository README documents the command line and its options, and the contributor notes explain the install and uninstall paths and the connection the tool opens to the HBS service when it starts. hAppRadar records the project as stalled with no release recorded, so the documented usage reads as a historical record rather than a supported installation guide.
How to get it
From the command line
- The repository documents command-line usage rather than a packaged installer: the tool is invoked as holo-auto-installer with the path to its app-list file.
- Write a YAML file listing the apps the HoloPort should host, then pass its path to the tool; its --admin-port option defaults to 4444 and its --happ-port option to 42233.
- The repository publishes no third-party installation instructions, and hAppRadar records the project as stalled — read the documented usage as a historical record rather than a supported install path.

Questions people ask
- What does holo-auto-installer do on a HoloPort?
- The project's contributor notes say it does two things: install apps that are supposed to be installed on the HoloPort but are not, and uninstall apps that are installed but are not supposed to be. source
- How does it know which apps a HoloPort should be running?
- It is given the path to a YAML list, split into core apps and self-hosted apps, where each entry gives an app id, a version and optionally URLs for the app package and its interface. source
- Is holo-auto-installer still maintained?
- hAppRadar records its activity as stalled with no release recorded, and the repository's own documentation does not state compatibility with current Holochain versions — the usage notes carry that caveat. source
