What is files and what is it for?
files is a Holochain app that lets the members of a private group keep files with the people who are supposed to have them, sharing some files with the group and sending others privately to one person. It is built to run as a tool inside Moss, where it adds file sharing to a group's set of collaboration tools.
files is a small Holochain app for sharing files inside a private group. It is written as a we-applet, one of the tools that can be added to a group running in Moss, the groupware app that hosts group collaboration spaces. Its job is deliberately narrow: keep a file with the members who are meant to have it, and let the group decide what is public.
The app treats a file in two ways. A member can keep a file privately on their own device, or publish it so others in the group can find and download it. Alongside that, one member can send a file directly to another, and the person receiving it chooses whether to accept it and keep it. The repository states the design goal as enabling the sharing of large files between group members, which is why the file transfer leans on a delivery module rather than a simple link.
In practice a group might use files to pass around a document, a data set or a media file that is awkward to move through other channels. The project README lists the features, including a short activity timeline for a file, a distribution or another member. More detail is in the repository on GitHub.
How to get it
In Moss
- Install Moss, the groupware app that hosts Holochain tools.
- In Moss, create a private group or join an existing one.
- Add files to that group as a tool.
Questions people ask
- Where does files keep a file?
- A member can store a file privately on their own source-chain, or share it publicly so others in the group can download it. The app also lists which files are stored locally and which have been shared publicly. source
- Can a member send a file to one person instead of the whole group?
- Yes. A file can be sent privately to another member, and the recipient accepts or declines it before it is stored on their own source-chain. source
- Is files only for small files?
- The repository describes the design goal as sharing big files between group members, using a delivery module to move the data. source
