What is file-storage-language and what is it for?

file-storage-language is an example AD4M language — a pluggable storage module for the AD4M framework — that provides file storage using Holochain. Written as an example, it shows how a language for AD4M is put together and how a host application loads and runs one.

file-storage-language is an example project from the coasys organisation that adds file storage to AD4M, the framework behind the Perspect3ve app. AD4M calls the pluggable pieces it runs "Languages", and this repository is one of them: its README describes it as an example AD4M Language project that implements file storage using Holochain. It is not an application you open, but a module that builds into a single JavaScript bundle for a host environment to load.

The idea is that an app should be able to save and find a file without caring which network holds it. A language takes a piece of data, stores it in some shared space, and hands back an address; later, given that address, it returns the same data. This project implements that pattern for files and includes a Holochain DNA, so the shared space it targets is a Holochain network; the AD4M documentation describes the same pattern with an IPFS language returning a content identifier and a Holochain language returning an entry hash.

In practice the language runs inside an AD4M host: the README says the resulting bundle is executed in Perspectivism, where the host calls its create() function with a context object carrying the agent and the available storage interfaces. Read the repository README for the build and context detail, and the AD4M documentation on languages for the contract a language implements. No push has been recorded since March 2023, so read the build description as historical rather than as a current install guide.

How to get it

As a library

  1. Clone the repository from its source URL and install the project's dependencies.
  2. Run the project's build, which compiles the Svelte icon components to build/ConstructorIcon.js and build/Icon.js and bundles the TypeScript entry point into a single file, build/bundle.js.
  3. Load the resulting bundle into an AD4M host such as Perspectivism, which calls the exported create() function with a LanguageContext carrying the agent and the storage interfaces available to it.
  4. Treat this build description as historical: the repository records no push after March 2023, and no maintained release or current compatibility is documented.

Questions people ask

Is file-storage-language an application I can install and run on its own?
No application is documented. The repository's whole output is one bundle, build/bundle.js, which the README says is executed inside an AD4M host such as Perspectivism, where the host calls the language's create() function. source
Does it keep files on Holochain or on IPFS?
The README is not consistent on this point: it describes the project as implementing file storage using Holochain and the repository carries a Holochain DNA, while the README's own note on injected context says the storage interface passed to the language at that time was IPFS and that Holochain support was still to come. source
Where is the language contract documented?
The AD4M documentation describes the contract — a module exporting a create function that receives a LanguageContext and returns a Language — and links template projects for expression and link languages. The repository itself documents only its build steps and the context it is handed. source
