What is farmhack and what is it for?

FarmHack is a Holochain app that gathers farm tools, hacks and equipment ideas into a shared library a group can browse, add to and discuss. It carries the tool-sharing catalog of the FarmHack farming community into an app where that library is kept together by the people using it.

FarmHack comes from a website where farmers share the tools and hacks they build, mend and improve, and this repository carries that library into a Holochain app. The repository is titled "FarmHack Holochain Prototype", and a scraper inside it reads tool pages from farmhack.org, the community site that describes itself as a place for farmers, engineers and designers to retool farms with an open-source ethic. The app therefore starts from the community's existing catalog rather than from content invented for it.

In the app that catalog becomes a library a group keeps together. Each entry is a farm tool or hack with a title, description, build status, licence, tags, author, pictures, attached files and wiki-style notes, and comments left on the website come across as notes on the tool. The project's own development configuration describes the applet as a "collaborative farm tool library", and its interface is built with the same libraries Lightningrod Labs uses for its Moss group collaboration tooling.

A group could open the library, find a hack such as the electric egg washing machine, read how it was made, keep the plans or photographs alongside it, and add a note about their own build. The repository is the place to learn more: its README is only a title line, so the code, the scraper and the development configuration are currently the fullest description of what the app does.

How to get it

In Moss

  1. This is a development path, not a published download: clone the repository and install its dependencies in a Holochain development shell.
  2. Run the repository's start:moss / launch:moss script, which starts the interface and loads the FarmHack applet into the group defined in we_dev/config.ts using the Moss (weave) command-line tool.

Desktop app

  1. Build the application package with the repository's npm run build:happ script.
  2. Launch the desktop development build with npm run start:tauri or npm run start:electron; the applet definition in we_dev/config.ts points at the packaged farmhack.webhapp.
  3. The repository does not document a packaged installer for end users.

Questions people ask

What does the FarmHack app keep for each tool?
Its scraper collects each farmhack.org tool page's title, description, build status, licence, tags, author, pictures, attached files, wiki text and related tools, and turns the page's comments into notes. source
How do you run FarmHack?
The repository provides development scripts that build the app and run it either inside a Moss group or as a desktop app; it does not document a packaged download for end users. source
Is FarmHack the same thing as the FarmHack website?
The repository's scraper reads tool pages from farmhack.org, which is a separate community project; no source states an ownership or partnership relationship between them. source
